I usually do 4 volatiles, 2 oxides, 1 50x coal, 3 50x iron to yield 200 steel at a time.
I guess I'll wait for the next update.
The arc furnace is the from the starting kit and only requires some power to operate. Front loading and drops finished product out the back.
The furnace is a large barrel looking thing with ore inlet on top and outlet on the bottom. It also has an inlet and outlet pipe on the back for gas. Does not require power.
When you add the volatiles and oxides to the furnace you will need to click the activate button for each piece of ice until the top opens again. Once the ice has melted it will ignite and the window on the front of the furnace will glow white, the intensity of the glow indicates the heat.
Drop in your first load of ore and mouse over the window on the front to see the ore is being melted. if you get the ratio correct (most people use 150 iron or to 50 coal) it will have Steel (Ingot) on the little display when you look at the furnace window. This is when you open the chute.
Your comments are in reverse order of the videos I've seen. They all drop the 3:1 ration of Iron/coal and THEN drop in the volatile & oxide last to fire up the furnace. I too am planning to use the 150 ore & 50 coal, guess I'll try it in reverse order.

Yep, that was it. Can't trust those u-tubers!
If you use the furnace and have pipes connected then its really important to have a handle so you can "stop" the gas from leaving the furnace out into the pipes.
Reason is you will require allot more resources to heat up and build up presure before you can melt something. So if you put in 3 red and 1 blue and nothing really happen or wont ignite, then that could be hte issue for some people.
Also my advice is to turn ( heat/presure ) on the furnace before you put in the stuff you want to melt.. The furnace need to be warm first... If anyone do it the other way arround it can be harder to start it.
tip.. to control the presure install some pipes on the furnace output and a handle.. and at the end of the pipes install a passive vent.. to get the right presure just open the valve/handle for example 1 sec and then go back and check your presure if its okay now... do this again and again until you have t he presure you want ;-)
Sounds like you are looking at an older guide. The furnace was changed to requiring volatiles and oxides first to prevent the furnace being exploited for free infinite gases. It is now requirement to have a hot furnace to process ores.
Good luck
1 Ox 1 Vol Add your ores. Then add another ox and vol
Adding ores cools it off.

With the fuel in, you can start up the furnace and it will be warm enough to do the rest.
essential is to do that at night, otherwise the volatile will dissolve while u'are loading. how to do :
before starting be sure to have in the belt the volatiles u need and near the stacks of coal and iron ( they must be at 1:3 ratio so 50 coal and 3x50 iron stacks [BE SURE that are full 50 each]
put the 2 oxy and ignite 2 time the furnace to melt em.
put the 4 volatile and ignite once.. it starts to burn: add the stacks of coal\iron, order doesnt matter but DO NOT PUT MORE only 1 stack of coal and 3 stack of iron.
look in the windows of the furnace once u read 200 steel pull the lever and u'll get the 200 steel ingots.
i processed 3 batches without reload the furnace. keep an eye on the pressure gauge if u are processing more... eaxh batch add gases inside
I am new to processing steel as well. I am finding that after I drop my one oxite into the furnace, the door shuts tight, and won't let me put anything else in. Has anyone seen this sort of thing?

Edit: I'll try it in reverse order as suggested by Jean above.
Hit activate 1 time for each ice.
When you add the vols(ice) and hit activate it reacts with the O2 and causes the fire to be started and reaches temps from 900-1300C depending on mix.
However if you just add 1 of each then add ores. You can use less ice.
Adding your ice and starting it up. You get to around 1000C.
Adding ores cools off the furnace. The ore is cold it transfers temp with furnace.
If the temperature drops below 900. You don't get anything.
You need to purge some and add more fuel.
Add 1 of each to get it warm. Add your ores. Then add 2OX and 1VOl.
It will be hot enough to make other things.
or you can put in your ore during daytime when the furnace is above 0.
Wait till night and add fuel. Then it's just burn and pull the lever.
1ox-1vol will be enough.
