Air conditioner "waste"
What is the air conditioner "waste" output? If I hook this up to my gas filtering system like I do with my furnace output, the air conditioner doesn't seem to work to heat the air in a room and basically just sucks all the air out of the room into the filtering system. If I just stick a single piece of pipe that goes nowhere, then everything seems to work fine. That pipe ends up with a pressure somewhere between the input and output, but the gas in there is really cold even when I'm heating the room. I don't really understand why it works like that.

So, do we know how we're supposed to set these up for sure? I've seen posted that we should leave the waste pipe open with radiators on it. I've seen that it should loop back into to the AC input with radiators on it, and I've also seen that it should connect to a tank.

I'm trying to get my greenhouse setup and I'm not sure how to properly set up the filtration.

On a related note, anyone have any luck getting the portable AC automated with logic? I've got two compare chips, a gas sensor, a reader, a memory, and two writers set up. I have 313 in the memory chip. Reader gets the temp from the sensor, one compare is set to greater comparing the reader and the memory. If if it's greater, a writer sends the signal to the AC unit. The other compare and writer are opposite to hopefully turn the AC off if the temp drops below 313.

I think my problem is in which setting the writers are sending the AC. Choices are I believe On, Open, Lock, or Mode. I think I've tried them all and it doesn't seem to want to work automatically. Any ideas?

You shouldn't need a separate writer to turn it off. The writer will either send a 0 (false/off) or a 1 (true/on) if you have it send to the "On" setting, based on the output of the compare. I've done a similar thing for my gas mixers to turn on/off based on the pressure on the output pipe.

Ok, I may try without the second compare/writer. There may be another issue, though. Using "On" may just power up the unit. There is both a power button and a start button. I'm not sure which function in the logic will work for "start" and "stop".

Delerium and Subject Henning, these are good solutions!

That could actually be a good use for X - make it a gas with very high thermal capacity. (...) Or you can play it safe and use nitrogen, but then your system can't handle sudden temperature surges so well.

Is this true that thermal capacities are programmed into the game, and different for different gas mediums?

If so, that would mean that water would be the best coolant, as its specific heat (thermal capacity more or less) is the highest.

If you use water as a coolant, won't you risk your pipes bursting if it freezes? I'd rather use something with a lower freezing point since you are in space.

No looping. That pipe filled with gas is a huge heatsink, no need for circulation, the gas stays in the pipe and convects/radiates heat. And right now apparently "X" is the best coolant. You also have not much else to do with it anyway.

In what sense is X the best coolant? I've heard people say this, but it usually seems in reference to the fact that there are no other uses for it than jetpack fuel. Does it behave differently from the other gases, for example with respect to thermal conductivity?

It transfers temperature faster (apparently. I have yet to test this myself yet)

Did you know then when molecules drop below absolute zero, they break the temperature barrier, which results in a loud noise called a.. temperature boom? :)

what kind of f.u.c.k.e.d up pseudo science is that?

not even pseudo science considering nothing can drop below absolute zero, by definition. I assume he was attempting humor though. I can't fully tell

No I'm serious you guys.. they break the temperature barrier and come out the other side into a parallel universe called Bug Heaven.. You guys have to be careful..

I think I heard the popping he is referring to... It must be Fridge Lord's brain cells bursting.

AC unit sucks gas from input, changes its temperature to the setpoint, and outputs gas on the output. It outputs heat/cold thermal change to the waste pipe. No cross-contamination happens between waste and the other pipes.

If you are trying to cool down a container you will probably need extraction volume pump to pump it out, and then re-fill it with the cold gas. Containers do not automatically mix temperature with the connected pipe, only pressure (imo devs should change this, but it is mostly accurate to RL so IDK).

You can also deploy it as an air filter, outputting only gas matching installed filters and everything else to waste.
