It makes much less sense to put traps around the outer perimeter, because the bigger the "circle" the more traps you need. While the smaller the base's radius the more capacity you can afford, thus increasing the density of defenses.
It gives you super speed that lasts for entire Base Defense.
You can run around your base in no time, eliminating the enemy threats with cool efficiency.
Actually, I did not receive any additional capacity. Are you sure that the capacity increase comes at the same time as base expansion three?
Like he said, base level only expend the area of wich you can place items.
