Some tips I've come up with.
EDIT: I MADE ALL OF THESE INTO A GUIDE:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1321092981

-----ORIGINAL POST:

I would like to elaborate on some of the tips:

1- If you stay on roads, the map marker will NEVER disappear. Out of flags? Want to see the marker in a hurry? Run to the nearest road.
If you have flags, USE THEM they give your exact position in the map no matter where you might be, and the last one you put blinks. They are cheap.

2- Every time you find a new area with animals to hunt, put the corresponding marker on your map. Animals respawn in time, so you always know where to look. Of course, later you will have your farms and even cattle.

3- If you get a game over, you have 2 options: "Restart from last save" does exactly that, normally your last save is always when you enter or exit your base. "Return to base camp" sends you back to the base and all the materials that you were carrying when you died will stay in a box marked in your map in the exact location where it happened. This box can be just fultoned. Ala Dark Souls. If you get too many game overs the box is lost, but not in the first game over, there's some tolerance (not sure how much). You get to make the choice between both options.

4- You don't have to farm ALL the enemies. Please don't do it: it's tedious and wastes time and thus resources (food, oxygen, drinks). If you want to level up fast, play coop once unlocked. Also, please don't kill them all, as the tutorial says, they can be avoided with stealth or outrunned if they discover you. If you kill them all, you are wasting, again, precious time which translates into oxygen, food, and drinks. Pick your fights wisely.

5- *Coop in this game is not a side dish. I repeat: coop in this game is not a side activity.*

It is a main one, just as the single player. The moment you unlock it, just try it and also try to win (you sometimes will get carried by higher level players). Coop missions deal looooots of materials and a great bunch of exp (kuban energy) depending on your performance and you will level up/gear up faster. You won't need to harvest wanderers again. EVER. Also, there is a good chance you will get uncommon, rare, legendary or epic weapons/gear which come with added perks (like ammo saving, damage/crit boost, chance to not die at zero life, or better stats for your character like STR, END, etc when equipped much like ala Diablo). The hardest the difficulty the better. I got a really good bow after a coop mission, and that was a game changer for me. Need exp? Materials? Want to get better gear/weapons? Want some great fun?

******************Fire up coop else you are missing out.*********************

6- GET the alternate ending first! just turn back and take the blue wormhole instead of doing the final battle. That way after you watch it (it's really genius and you will understand why the story is actually good, and there are already theories being discussed about this matter) the credits will roll, you will get the achievement, and you will be returned to the exact spot to do the other ending.

7- A single character can learn and level up all the classes, and you can redo character cosmetic creation all the times you like from your base. If you make more characters, all of them share almost everything and the corresponding bases will produce goods at the same time and this is the real purpose of said slot. If your family wants to play, it is better for them to use steam family sharing via their own steam accounts (otherwise they will use up your ammo and food). You receive coins for this and other things on a daily basis if you log in to the game.

Demi does a GREAT job explaining this a lot better than me, the confusion of the infamous "save slot" credit to him:

8- I would like to add... after you finish the game a lot of endgame content unlocks, and the real game begins (the game is endless, and more content is coming this month). You also unlock 4 more character classes for coop and solo play (all the classes are attainable on one character don't worry).

9- Did I tell you coop is a blast and makes you get stronger faster?

Have fun! :)

EDIT: My inspiration came from this video. This list was meant to explain/elaborate on some of the tips given and also to add others myself. Credit to its creator.
Watch it as he shows how to make the most of this game. (The video starts with Angry Joe thrashing the game for a moment, and then he responds with tips).

Nice tip, especially for the roads, thats something I'm going to try out later! I have a question, I've seen alot of threads about what class to play and perks and such of the classes spoken, but I see nowhere in game to "look" at my class or switch. Does it unlock at a certain level? Is there a UI element I've completely ignored? Thanks!

WOW... I did not know some of this O.O I blame the game for not telling me but thanks for telling me!

Since you're adding #6 spoiler as tips, might as well mention:

Bring explosive barrels to fight Big Mouth.
Feeding Big Mouth an explosive barrel will earn you an achievement - Bad Meal
Pretty sure it deals massive damage as well. (Never occured to me to craft barrels, realized I missed the achievement after killing both Bosses...)

9- If you have trouble activating a teleporter due to massive enemy waves try to thin out the waves by killing some of the surrounding wanderers.

I found that if you push zombie to the spikes fences, they would stick on it. I wonder can they become a Zombie fences...

4 new classes will be unlocked after you finish the game. You do another (very hard be prepared) base digging and then you will be sent on a mission that unlocks them. In this mission, try the stealth approach or it will be hard.

It's actually an achievement.
Spit: Use foot press skill to skewer 50 creatures.

Note: Enemy does not stay sticked on, they wiggle themselves out after awhile.

Ty for reading :)

You should also mention some things like in Coop you can use other people's wormhole generator from the map. Or once you hit Srank you can end the mission early and save time.

Ty for your input. Right now I'm gathering some more tips to include in the guide, and this will be surely included, with credit to you. If I get enough coop specific tips, I might do a coop version. :)

Well you can also add that side missions reward the resources to craft a stack of the listed reward.

Kuban and resources collected in the mission don't go with you. So may as well fill your pockets with what you can and repair what you can. No sense in being frugal with Kuban those walkers are very nice

Don't summon Ray unless ALL the ♥♥♥♥ has hit the fan and you're so far up ♥♥♥♥ creek you're practically in ♥♥♥♥ ocean. He ♥♥♥♥♥ up you, your teammates, and your defenses. He gives zero ♥♥♥♥♥.

If you're not a scout, don't bother grabbing resources. Rush to the digging machine, place it down and drop your wormhole generator. Leave the items to the scouts cause nine times out of ten they've got the AoE loot.

Always boost the digger

Point whoring pays ok dividends but an intact digger pays more.
