Hi, I'm Roman. I've spent almost three years making Kingdom.py, a town builder where you don't build anything with the mouse. Every hero runs a Python script that you write for them.

Press Run, and the hero walks over to the plot and builds, house after house. Meanwhile the editor highlights the line that is running right now.

Three games shaped it more than any others:

• The Farmer Was Replaced. You don't control the workers, you program them. Loops, conditions, lists, functions and modules unlock in the research tree, just like new buildings.

• RimWorld. Townsfolk have traits, moods, friends and breakdowns. They fall in love, marry, raise children and grow old, and some of them steal or take bribes. Each person's personality is six small Python functions, and a child gets each one from either their mother or their father.

• SimCity. An economy built on taxes, fields, bakeries, mines and smithies. Rats in the granaries, fires, raids, streets with their own names, and grand projects that each cost a fortune.

• The game ships with CPython and the real numpy, pandas and matplotlib, so you can turn the kingdom's history into a table and plot it right on your desk. requests works too, except the requests are delivered by pigeons.

• The console has ps, top, kill and cron. Every program in the kingdom is a process, even the crabs' brains.

• Git is built in: branches, merges and tests before every commit. Neighbouring islands send you pull requests.

• Six islands trade at live prices, and your trading bot can read the news wire.

• Your scripts are plain .py files. Edit them in VS Code and the game picks up the changes.

The story starts with print() and ends with a town where four heroes split the work between their programs. There are 36 chapters, each with hints and a reference solution. A newcomer needs about eight hours to finish the story.

The free demo comes out in the next few days. The full game is planned for October–December 2026. Add it to your wishlist and Steam will let you know when it's out.
