(DOTMOD) Surface ships suitable for campaign?
Heya all! I've just beaten my first vanilla campaign and wanted to try DotMod now, I've seen Wolfpack345 do a lot of surface combat videos with the mod, but it doesn't seem like he does any campaign with it... Are they just a bad choice for campaigns as it's not intended for them or do they work fine in campaign mode too?

Well if you are tasked with sinking an enemy CV or going to go head on with any enemy TF in that campaign I would think it a suicide run!

As far as I know you are never assigned to any friendly/allied fleet or TF so its just you vs all...

FIrst off, the DotMod add on brings new life to Cold Waters, very much worthwhile to install.

The surface ships you are able to use in campaign mode work nicely with the campaigns, sans perhaps the Iowa class. Though Iowa's are a great class to play against surface ships and launching TASM/TLAMs, nothing on them for sub work which will easily be 1/2 of your missions.

His latest release brings SH-60s to the fight and they greatly enhance your ASW capability. These are available on the OH Perry's, Arleigh Burke's, Belknaps and Tico's. Though the attached helos lack sensor support, they are great stand off weapons.

Ultimately, back to your question, you have the ability to fight in a campaign with a surface vessel, however, choose wisely. Tico's, Burkes Belknaps work best, since it's always 1 vs a fleet sometimes.

OK But...

How do you win a mission when it's your solo ship against an enemy TF though?

This I would like to know before trying a surface ship campaign.

Thanks

You must use mostly your SAMs as ASMs, as well as manuever your ship to present a narrow profile and most importantly, turn on your Anti-ship missile system (if equipped) which enables automatic shooting down of some incoming ASMs. If not equipped with an anti-ship missile system, then you must manually engage the incoming with your SAM's.

It's very doable, but not very realistic, hence some of the added automation of shooting down the incoming ASMs.

I would suggest trying it out but use the Belknap or the Tico in 84 or the Arleigh Burke/Tico in 2000.
