Convert to metric numbers?
Is it possible to convert the Ship information to lets say metric.
Instead of feet it says how deep it is in meters, and instead of knots it says km/h
Any mods for this? simple file edits i can do?

I can see why changing to a scale with meters makes sense, for instance when captaining a British boat. But the messurement of speed on the ocean is measured in knots all over the wourld. Why changes that?

Sorry, can't answer your question, but had to ask you...

dno just used to kmh and meters. would be better to have km instead of kyd

Well, IIRC the soviet/russians use the metric system afloat, so it would make sense for a russian sub mod I guess, but every NATO country uses nautical measurements (knots/nautical miles, feet ect.), even the Royal Navy. But a changeable scale would be okay by me :)

I suspect with the inevitable Soviet DLC the Devs will probably add metric displays. Though it may be sub/nation specific...

It is good for you to learn to use knots and feet . It is authentic USN. Good exercise for your brain to think in multiple ways. You will quiclkly get used to it and then be in a better position of wider level of knowledge.

Well, I don't mind thinking in feet and knots. Question is, why use yards? If speed at sea is measured in knots (nautical miles per hour) then why expressing distance in yards? I would prefer to see distance in nautical miles in stead of yards or kiloyards. It is than easier to calculate the time a torpedo takes to cover a given distance. Now you have to convert knots to kiloyards/second. That is unnecessarily complicated.

If yards and nautical miles were somehow connected, you would think that a round number of yards form a nautical mile. But this is not the case. A statute mile (or land mile) is 1760 yards (whoever came up with that number was a complete calculus nerd) but a nautical mile is 2025.3718285 yards (except for the Brits who defined a nautical mile as 2026.66666r yards). In short, it's a complete mess. In that case, doing everything in metric (like the Russians) makes a lot more sense.

1 nm is one minute or 1/60 of a degree of latitude. It therefore has its practicalities in aviation and naval navigation. But Imperial or Metric as I understand has been a long time issue in the world. Even political.

True for the most part, but on submarines in Norway we gauge depth in meters, and speed in knots. We do not use feet.

I honestly thought the British also gauged depth in meters as well. I was not aware they used feet...

Still planning to purchase but...

Being fluent in multiple measurement systems is realistic for a military officer.
So it's really not just a matter of which Navy you "serve" (in the game).

Flying close air support my tasking was often relayed in metric.
And troops in contact frown on being asked 'What's that in feet?" ;-)

You learn to go from meters to feet, centigrade to fahrenheit, liters to quarts, etc. in a hurry.

Often it's an approximation, which is enough, since we're doing 500 mph (805 kph).

Such as "Local temp is 15C"... just double it and add 30... 15 x 2 = 30 + 30 = 60 F (close)

We're taught little tricks such as this to allow fast response in battle.

Anyway...
As a "yet to own" ... just saying metric makes sense. :-)
As a dev team member.... Killerfish has created an awesome product. Metric would be nice.
As an aviator considering a game where we go ~35 knots max... Are we there yet? :-)

As a spouse... ANOTHER GAME!? ... can this be bundled with a necklace from Tiffany's? :-)

As much as I prefer measurements in metric, because that is what I use in day to day life. I can see why they'd want to use nautical (not imperial) measurements in a nautical game.

The thing that irks me about it, is the use of "kilo-yards" and the use of metric dimensions for ship specifications.

In my not so humble opinion, pick a system of measurement and stick to it.

Knots, nautical miles, feet, sure that's fine. But then measure ship dimensions in feet as well. I can perfectly deal with the idea that 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour, and that 1 nautical mile is approximately 6000 feet. It even makes some mental math easier because of the 6000 feet to the mile thing.

But as it is in game it's basically a sort of random mess.

I'd much rather see the whole KYD thing made into a choice whether you want NM, KYD, or FT. Same with ship dimensions. It's great that a ship is specified as being 67x7.5 metres, but it just doesn't make much sense. Why can't that ship be specified as being 200x25 feet?

Same with KYD, I keep on dividing that number by 2 so I get NM. Surely the game can make that conversion for me.

I really don't mind that the game is in nautical measurements, I just want it to be consistent and use 1 system of measurements rather than mix up 3.
