Hopes and prayers for the crew of ARA San Juan (S-42)
Just heard from collegues in the Navy that the TR 1700 type Argentinian diesel eletric submarine San Juan (S-42), is missing with all hands.

Let us pray for the safety of the crew, and for a swift and successful search and rescue operation.

Probably - from the sound of what was coming out lately - there wasn't much hope of rescue anyway. If it sounded like what happened to Scorpion, as was suggested, then it is possable they didn't survive the 'acustic event' that happened shortly after last contact.
Do they know about the explosion was?

They have not stated it yet, but it seems likely the recorded sound is the sound of the hull imploding (collapsing in on itself).

An other theory is a massive battery explosion. (Based on the Information that the ARA San Juan reported problems with their main batteries just prior to them dissapearing).

But I guess we will not know for sure until they locate the wreck.

Our brand new Triomphant SSBN are only meant to sail for 40 years even if they are the top of the technology and the most expensive sub ever, a SUB is not meant to stay alive as long as a surface ship

And, yet, one of the oldest vessels in active service in a submarine! Taiwan has one that is a WWII vintage GUPPY boat (the Hai Shih) that soldiers on, though primarially as a trainer.
Poland has one Type 207/Kobben-class (the Kunna) still in service after FIFTY YEARS!
Argentina, Colombia, Greece, Indonesia, Peru, Turkey, and Venezuela all have Tye 209's that are either 40 years old or getting close and still are in active service.
Italy has four Sauro-class boats that are still in service; two of them are in their 30's.
Russia and several other countries have Kilo-class boats in their 30's still in service.

Submarines, with resonably good upkeep, can last a long time.

As a curiosity I can mention that I sailed on the Kobben klass (type 207), before we handed them over to Poland in 2001/2002.

Norway originally had intended to use the type 207's until 2009. But we had a project for new boats in the works, and holding on to the boats was deemed unnessesary.

The new boats did not pan out however, and we suddenly went from 12 subs to 6 subs in a very short time...

Missing Argentinian submarine vanished after water entered the vessel's SNORKEL and caused a battery to short-circuit, navy reveals

Well, It's official then! The Argentinian Navy has called of the search for survivors.
A final salute to our brothers and sister, now on eternal patrol.

Very bad scene, the intake on a snorkel mast is quite large so even at periscope depth, the amount of water coming in can be rather dramatic if the snorkel head valve did not automatically shut. If the sub was snorkeling with the diesel using air from compartments ventilation system and the water came into the boat, water could make its way to the battery which is at the lowest part of the submarine.

I know nothing about this class of boat but if salt water did find the battery the contamination could create chlorine gas which could incapacitate a crew. A battery could then short circuit and result in a fire and if a crew were incapacitated and a fire spread, the boat could be lost. Fire on a submarine is just as bad if not worse then flooding and in deep water it is unforgiving.

As Dolphin 38 wrote above, they were our brothers and sisters as all submariners are and anytime a submarine is lost, the cost is dramatic. Rest in peace crew, you did not deserve this!

On the positive side Argentina will need to do a Full review of its navy,
And i hope start a Emergency Submarine Program to retire its obsolete submarines for new built Project 636s,
Then start a Advanced Submarine Program of replacing the Project 636s with Type 214s.
Sad news. I've been following the event every day hoping for the best. My thoughts are with the families and friends of the sailors..

Very sad indeed..As former military (US ARMY), my heart and prayers go out to any servicemember, of any country, and their families in times of tragedy. God Bless.
I am not sure how relevant this still is but I just came accross it

From the K-429
emergency buoys and escape capsules had been welded to the hull to prevent losing them at sea,
That was common for most Russian submarines at that time or not installed at all,
The S-42 may have done the same or not had its Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon installed properly or it may have not been a Auto Float Free type and is a manual type on a cable.
