They have not stated it yet, but it seems likely the recorded sound is the sound of the hull imploding (collapsing in on itself).
An other theory is a massive battery explosion. (Based on the Information that the ARA San Juan reported problems with their main batteries just prior to them dissapearing).
But I guess we will not know for sure until they locate the wreck.

As a curiosity I can mention that I sailed on the Kobben klass (type 207), before we handed them over to Poland in 2001/2002.
Norway originally had intended to use the type 207's until 2009. But we had a project for new boats in the works, and holding on to the boats was deemed unnessesary.
The new boats did not pan out however, and we suddenly went from 12 subs to 6 subs in a very short time...

A final salute to our brothers and sister, now on eternal patrol.

I know nothing about this class of boat but if salt water did find the battery the contamination could create chlorine gas which could incapacitate a crew. A battery could then short circuit and result in a fire and if a crew were incapacitated and a fire spread, the boat could be lost. Fire on a submarine is just as bad if not worse then flooding and in deep water it is unforgiving.
As Dolphin 38 wrote above, they were our brothers and sisters as all submariners are and anytime a submarine is lost, the cost is dramatic. Rest in peace crew, you did not deserve this!
And i hope start a Emergency Submarine Program to retire its obsolete submarines for new built Project 636s,
Then start a Advanced Submarine Program of replacing the Project 636s with Type 214s.

From the K-429
emergency buoys and escape capsules had been welded to the hull to prevent losing them at sea,
That was common for most Russian submarines at that time or not installed at all,
The S-42 may have done the same or not had its Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon installed properly or it may have not been a Auto Float Free type and is a manual type on a cable.
