Cold Waters

Cold Waters

AI is WAAAAAY overtuned....game is no longer fun
Hey all:

I really enjoyed the game when it first came out and yes, it was a little too easy...but now...its STUPID. I get a sonar contact, man stations, rig for silent....start classifying. Within 30 seconds 4 rockets are on their way and active sonars are banging away. Its just absurd.

Killerfish....something NEEDS TO BE DONE. I will boycott your games until this is fixed. Its NOT fun.

The problem is not the AI being too hard, from what you describe, you seem to be experiencing the same issue i am. The game is starting you too close to the enemies. Leaving you with no time to plan an approach, use stealth, etc.

I too hope they fix this soon, in the mean time, use the "All hands battle stations" option to start instead of "Close to". Its supposed to help with this problem (though to be honest i dont see much change).

As a suggestion, maybe think about the way you ask things? im pretty sure issuing threats about "boycotts" probably wont have the desired effect.

I really love this game but im having a hard time of it, i did all the tutorials several times as well as looking for guides and tips online, i think boycotting is a little childish though,
I am new to subsims so maybe thats part of the problem but so far most of my engagements involve sneeking around for 15 -20 mins at a distance trying to classify all contacts and get into a good position to engage, but before im rady everyone will usually fire at me and i usually die, and it can be a little frustrating to die so quickly after spending so long sneaking around.

after reading this thread I tried a few 1 on 1 duels closing to 25 kyrds instead of manning battlestations which is what i was doing before, and this seems to make a big difference in how long it takes the emamy to locate and fire at you, this seems to be a much better option, it gives you a bit more distance to work with and emamies seem much less aware of you untill you do something noisy, like say fire all your torpedos in their general direction.
I have also found the MOSS weapons to be very useful distractions for making the enamy second geuss where tou are

Being thrown into close encounters is just the roll of the dice

It makes for an interesting situation, and don't forget even though it seems as though you are being pounced on by choppers you still have enough time to take stock of the situation and react appropriately (even) if it is only ten seconds you should be able to work out how to get out of a sticky situation

The uncertainty of each encounter makes the game more enjoyable IMHO

Got this from another thread:

The tutorial says that the faster you are moveing when contact is made the closer you will start the engagment.

I use the slow speed most of the time. Sometimes i even go to the projected path of the enemy icon and wait standing still, there doesnt seem to be much difference except in my starting speed. I still start up with enemies under 10kyds most of the time.

I do enjoy these "skirmishes" where i immediately have to go into attack and evasion manouvers, but i would also like to play the hunting game from time to time.

I have tried verifying the files on steam, reinstalling, changing distance scale, difficulty (currently im on realistic), using the "hands on battlestations" and "close to 25k", but still i start too close most of the time. In fact, the only time i recall starting up without contacts close by (recently) was yesterday in one of those TLAM missions where you need to fire missiles at enemy stuff inland.
I honestly dont know whats wrong.

@ROLFCopter, a couple of weeks ago, during one of Jiveturkey's Jive Talk, someone from KillerFish was in the talk, and stated that they found a bug in the detection though I dont' think it's been patched yet. In addition to what otehrs have said above, there are mulitple factors at play and many of us have been victim to "instaneous" detection.

I wonder if not being in silent running when the combat first starts is part of the problem. That may be just enough time for the enemy to get curious and immediately start investigating the contact. I think if you are stopped or moving slow on the map you should start all encounters in silent running
