The Skipjack has crapy sonar over the other classes and that makes it hard to find the Russian ships/subs but makes it funner and more challenging at the same time,
The Skipjack is the smallest class and one of the fastest in the game and is much better in a knife fight then the other classes do to its hi-speed and small size,
And in torpedo heavy waters the Skipjack is the best at weaving in and out of the torpedo/s LoS Matrix style.
The Skipjack has six torpedo tubes that lets it hit above its weight and in the 1984 game mode you can sink six ships/subs at the same time befor relode.
I actually prefer the Narwahl over the 688 as it's quieter, more nimble and has almost as good a sonar system.
The Daphne-class/S-60 isn't in the Mod.... so, from Vanilla, definitely Sturgeon :-)
it was a one-off, a mutant; never intended for mass consumption.
I prefer the Permit/Thresher or Sturgeon myself.
Both boats are very quiet, have enough magazine space to carry a good loadout and are far beyond most of their adversaries. While not the fastest or the quietest, they are the boats that would have won or lost the war... so they are the ones I fight.
The '60s, though... all things considered, I would roll the Sturgeon, with Permit taking a close second. Don't get me wrong, the Skipjack's legs make her a very attractive lady... but the Russkies just tend to be faster, and you need the stealth to get close enough for a killshot. The Sturgeon is practically a ghost by comparison.
In a '84 campaign, it wouldn't make sence to play anything other than the Narhwall or LA class. Allthough the others get retrofitted towed arrays, they still have only 1 or 2 wires and are a lot louder so you'll have a hard time with Sierra's and Victor III's. You can play them if LA or Narhwall are not challenging enough for you.
...exactly as I did 84'!
Another interesting option is to try a diesel for the 84' with the mod, I tried several but motivation was low... but if any of the player's coutry sub is starred, this definitely turns the 84' on and hot!!! :-D
Both subs are quite interesting. 688 is basically a run and gun boat, sees almost everything and can blow up or sink almost everything. Narwhal, on the other hand, allows to act more stealthy (and maneuver it's way out of a trouble) - a touch I prefer over brute force on any day of the week.
2 wires is good for knocking out the nearby escort; sniping out the critical ship in small surface groups or bashing out nearby subs in a short range sub encounter. Though you won't wipe all the escorts of large groups.
Playing the LA in 84 (unmodded) having 4 wires on makes attacking large surface groups much simpler. Fire them spaced out a few seconds. Initial plot is toward the ships. If the wire doesnt break put them on a dog leg. Turn them all around the same point on the dog leg to confuse counter attacks. Then steer each towrad escorts. The spaced out makes it easier to select for controlling them. With 3 escorts or less you have spares in the attack in case one breaks a wire. Any left over spares start hitting the supply or amphib ships.
LA is quieter IIRC due to the hull coating. The Sturgeon being noiser means you get fired on more. As mentioned the Sturgeon is more agile. So the Sturgeon is a more brown-pants game with alot more ninja dodging moves. Its a different way to have "fun" with the game.
