What submarine from the original game do you prefer?
So, here is the question: what submarine from the original (not modified) game do you prefer and why?

Personally, I don't see viable subs other than 688 (Los Angeles) and Narwhal. I may be wrong.
And so I would like to hear some words from you regarding such subs as Skipjack, Permit and Sturgeon: are they viable? Are they good for 60-s? Are they still good for 80-s? Should we play them for reasons other than 'because it's not Los Angeles'? What are their strong and weak sides? Why would you prefer one over others?

Please, refrain from discussing history and stay on topic of their in-game viability.

The Skipjack does not have the same % of torpedo tube jamming that all the other clases have as its tubes are front mounted so it can go over 20 KDYs and fire with out tubes jamming as much,

The Skipjack has crapy sonar over the other classes and that makes it hard to find the Russian ships/subs but makes it funner and more challenging at the same time,

The Skipjack is the smallest class and one of the fastest in the game and is much better in a knife fight then the other classes do to its hi-speed and small size,
And in torpedo heavy waters the Skipjack is the best at weaving in and out of the torpedo/s LoS Matrix style.

The Skipjack has six torpedo tubes that lets it hit above its weight and in the 1984 game mode you can sink six ships/subs at the same time befor relode.

Thank you for your answer. Any other considerations regarding Permit and Sturgeon, people?

Narwahl for the win. It makes as much noise as mist passing over damp grass, has a decent size magazine and has good maneuverability. It's only disadvantage is that compared to other subs it's a bit slower, but then stealth is the name of the game for the Narwahlski :steamhappy:

I actually prefer the Narwahl over the 688 as it's quieter, more nimble and has almost as good a sonar system.

So, once again no Permit/Sturgeon positive responses?

Sturgeon!!!! ... I can control 2 simultaneous mk37s!!!!

The Daphne-class/S-60 isn't in the Mod.... so, from Vanilla, definitely Sturgeon :-)

I play with everything BUT the Narwhal...
it was a one-off, a mutant; never intended for mass consumption.

I prefer the Permit/Thresher or Sturgeon myself.
Both boats are very quiet, have enough magazine space to carry a good loadout and are far beyond most of their adversaries. While not the fastest or the quietest, they are the boats that would have won or lost the war... so they are the ones I fight.

Right... Anything else, fellas?

Really all depends on the year you're running. 1984, you almost HAVE to run the 688 or Narwhal, lest those pesky Victor IIIs and Sierras hear you coming from the Barents.

The '60s, though... all things considered, I would roll the Sturgeon, with Permit taking a close second. Don't get me wrong, the Skipjack's legs make her a very attractive lady... but the Russkies just tend to be faster, and you need the stealth to get close enough for a killshot. The Sturgeon is practically a ghost by comparison.

For the '68 campaign I prefer Sturgeon over Skipjack (haven't played Permit yet) for the reason that it's sonar is better and you can have two torps on a leash instead of just one with the Skip. Allthough the Sturgeon is the slowest boat in 68 (it can't make knuckles), it's sonar and quietness make up for that. Don't get too exited over the six tubes of the Skip, you still need to slow down to 10 knts to safely fire a Mk37 and, like I said, you can only keep one wire at a time, which makes pincer moves a lot harder if not nearly impossible.

In a '84 campaign, it wouldn't make sence to play anything other than the Narhwall or LA class. Allthough the others get retrofitted towed arrays, they still have only 1 or 2 wires and are a lot louder so you'll have a hard time with Sierra's and Victor III's. You can play them if LA or Narhwall are not challenging enough for you.

...exactly as I did 84'!
Another interesting option is to try a diesel for the 84' with the mod, I tried several but motivation was low... but if any of the player's coutry sub is starred, this definitely turns the 84' on and hot!!! :-D

I played Skipjack & Los Angeles in '84 and Sturgeon in '68. All of them viable although Skipjack has obvious difficulties when attacking large surface formations.

I have just finished my first campaign on Narwhal. Initially I started on 688, but a left over Helo torpedoed me when I was searching for one last merchant ship with my RADAR, so after the rescue my second choice was Narwhal.

Both subs are quite interesting. 688 is basically a run and gun boat, sees almost everything and can blow up or sink almost everything. Narwhal, on the other hand, allows to act more stealthy (and maneuver it's way out of a trouble) - a touch I prefer over brute force on any day of the week.

One youtuber suggested IIRC the Sturgeon so I tried in the 84 campaign. The smaller size does make it more agile at dodging torps. It can handle 2 wires still in tact out of 4 tubes. That's not quite as bad as that as one tube I usually have a MOSS inside anyway. Tube 4 is a backup in case a wire breaks or an escort gets close to 10 kyd.

2 wires is good for knocking out the nearby escort; sniping out the critical ship in small surface groups or bashing out nearby subs in a short range sub encounter. Though you won't wipe all the escorts of large groups.

Playing the LA in 84 (unmodded) having 4 wires on makes attacking large surface groups much simpler. Fire them spaced out a few seconds. Initial plot is toward the ships. If the wire doesnt break put them on a dog leg. Turn them all around the same point on the dog leg to confuse counter attacks. Then steer each towrad escorts. The spaced out makes it easier to select for controlling them. With 3 escorts or less you have spares in the attack in case one breaks a wire. Any left over spares start hitting the supply or amphib ships.

LA is quieter IIRC due to the hull coating. The Sturgeon being noiser means you get fired on more. As mentioned the Sturgeon is more agile. So the Sturgeon is a more brown-pants game with alot more ninja dodging moves. Its a different way to have "fun" with the game.

My favorite submarine class, both in game and real life, will always be the Los Angeles Class.

I challenge you all to use a Skipjack, Permit or Sturgeon in the 1984 campaign, with the highest difficulty settings and no save scumming(so if you die you start from the beginning).
