shallow water + no thermal layer = undetected ?
I am having difficulties playing single mission 5 "Beating The Odds" without getting hit.
My speed is always <= 5, there is no thermal layer and the ocean bottom is around 300.
So where do you hide?

How do you stay undetected?
Please advise.

stay right above the sea floor. i heard you can disguise yourself as the "ground"

Shallow waters have very poor conductance of sound, so you can actually get quite close without being detected :)

Look at the signal on your passive sonar, it's much noisier than it is in open waters.

thanks for the replies

@johncage
how many feet above sea floor do you recommend?

@Waervyn
I always get detected, so am I too close?
how close to the enemy do you recommend?

How close are you to the enemy?
I made the mistake of closing to around 5K yards, which is way way too close so I'm told.

Nope.
It's not about HOW CLOSE, it's about WHERE AT.
Get into a vessel's baffels, and you can get insanely close (a couple thousand yards) and they are absolutely none the wiser. In fact, it is a NECESSITY in a '68 Campaign to get this close... because the Mk37 is the slowest of torpedoes - I can shoot one at a Foxtrot at 3,000 yards, walk to my kitchen, microwave a can of soup and come back just before it hits. If you don't get that close firing Mk37's, your target can turn a tail chase into a failed attack; then he'll turn around and fire a reaction shot down the torps bearing line and YOU are the one in trouble.

how can you get to a vessel's baffles, if the vessel is in the front of you?

Exactly like you would expect - do your best impression of a hole in the water untill he passes you by, then follow.

You can't always get into a perfect position... sometimes you must, as we said in the MP Corps 'engage to disengage.'

Make sure to look at the enemy signature reading to see how likely they are to spot you. If their active or passive radar is above 0 you should start to get worried. Above 10 they will apparently really start spotting you and calculating a solution. But basically, if their passive sonar says -50 or so, don't be afraid to speed up faster than 5 knots (but have a look to see what effect it has on the numbers).

Thanks for the tip.
I have just tried the mission again.
And I am very sure all the enemy signature number is < 0,
but then out of nowhere, there is a torpedo dropped by helo exactly on the top of my sub,
how is this possible?

There is a bug in the 1.0 release allowing ASW aircraft to see you better than they should. Most of that is worked out for the patch. Also Helos have dipping sonar that can find you. Aircraft have MAD systems that may see you if they fly over. If anyone get a fix on you is is a short time to all of them coming after you once located.

Very helpful info in this thread, ty.

mine is already 1.01b.
however, torpedo dropped by helo exactly in top of my sub quite often,

so I still do not get it,
how do you stay stealthy and undetected?

Dipping sonar that is passive makes no noise, and the helicopter sounds, depending on ambient conditions may also be very quiet.

The simple answer is:
SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T

Not every mission is going to be possible; sometimes you will be put in a spot where you are going to be detected whatever precautions you have taken. A chopper will randomly sit down on top of you. You'll enter battle against a Kilo making steeerageway who is actually quieter than your nuke. You'll be fast and deep and come above the layer to check things out, only to find you have driven into an ASW patrol.

Believe in the Kobyashi Maru,
it is a real thing.
