How to Evade?
I can never escape an engagement, especially in shallow waters - even using noise decoys and trying to creep away, using layers etc, I get killed 100% of the time should I be detected by a large group. About to give up, any help? (git gud)

There are things you can try, in a number of engagements i've had so far (mostly have been with enemy subs in the single missions) i've just released a noisemaker and tried to run away from a torp and change course/depth.

A good evasion technique to try is to drop a noisemaker, then run silent, cut engines and go as deep as possible (if you're no deeper than say 400 ft) or climb if you're deep (deeper than 500 ft, as a rough guide). Also the MOSS decoys are your best bet but should be saved when you know an enemy has the more modern soviet torps- the USET-80.

What enemies have you encountered that keep killing you? are you playing the single missions?

It's tough to say the least, modern torpedoes are very good, maybe too good.

In reality you'd want to stand off and use the distance of your guided torps or Harpoons to keep you out of they're sensor range. Unfortunately in some engagements you are very close to enemy subs\ships and you basically are in a knife fight from the beginning.

Once a torp is dropped on your position you are pretty much in trouble. Flank speed, decoys, turns, descents, ascents. Try to put noise makers between you and the torp, vary your speed, depth. I have yet to find a for sure way of losing a torp. If a second torp drops, you are pretty much a kill but of course never stop trying.

Of course while you are doing all this twisting and turning and cavitating every sonar in the world sees you so you invite even more attacks.

So for me, once I get contacts and I know I'm close I just start firing off my torps in hopes of distracting them enough that they don't fire down the torpedo bearing. This is effective sometimes with subs but at some point the ASW aircraft show up either way and you are done for.

Might just wait for it to be patched and tweaked and then work on tactics then, right now it's a bit frustrating.

No this is campaigns - I'm ok with enemy subs, but a mission or 2 into a campaign you get missions like "sink an invasion fleet" which is practically game over - yeah I'll sink a few with missles/torps, but then I get spammed with aircraft from all angles, and then wiped by bombs etc from aircraft/figates etc. I'm only playing on normal level lol.

What are your primary targets? for such a fleet it should just be one- such as a Kiev. So just sink that and get out of there. Or troop transporters.

If I remember correctly the torpedos have a wide horizontal scan but a low verticle.

My best tactic so far is to try and lead the torpedo high and then evade low or lead low and evade high. If you can get enough distance vertically then it won't reacquire you when it circles around.

The MOSS is really good. Using the MOSS with a noisemaker is a great combo because they really compliment each other nicely. The noisemaker will temporarily mask you while the MOSS will lure the enemy torpedo away from you. I find that noisemakers alone tend to be insufficient because they block the torpedo but only temporarily. The enemy torpedo will often come around and reacquire you again and again.
