I love the Sjöormen class, certainly one of the best submarine of its time.
In 1984 Sweden and Norway (which used the same torpedo) had just gotten a brand new hydrogen peroxide torpedo that's wire guided and has a passive seker (type 613). And a more modern ASW torpedo.
I wanted to implement the Japanese subs and have all the raw stats (or as good as can be weaseled from Jane's and Conway's), but till you have to worry about power management, they won't have anything 'special' to offer over US boats.
You can't have a Cold War sub game with the Type 206 class Unterseeboot, either... though those iconic boats will have to wait till we can cram 8 tubes on a single boat. ;)
Were?
Hell, they still ARE operating them RIGHT NOW!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cutlass_(SS-478) - oldest submarine on active duty!!!

Wow- Cutlass isn't even looking too shabby:

Would be an interesting challenge to use her in a campaign against PRC..
Well, in a 1984 campaign, where the vast majority of the ChiCom sub fleet is Type 033s (Romeo), with a few early Type 035s (Ming) knocking about, I'd say that the old 'Hai Shih' might stand a bit of a chance with some acoustic-homing torps (Italian models IIRC) and a very patient and skilful skipper aboard.
Any time after that, she'd be mere bait as the more advanced versions of the Type 035s started to come online. I doubt very seriously that she'd last more than about 35 seconds in combat, as she's probably loud enough compared to the Type 039 and Type 039A classes that they could probably find her with a glass pressed against the hull. :-(
P.S.: I once read that she stil uses the original TDC for establishing solutions.
While this is a 'spiritual successor', we should not limit our hopes (or modding aims) to the original. Clancy also wrote "The Bear and the Dragon" you know.
I hope Killerfish turns this into a good modern sub sim covering everything post WWII.
