Cold Waters

Sturgeon class, NATO/Soviet submarines and Pacific campaign?
The Sturgeon class makes a great addition to the current selection of submarines and hopefully both the standard and long hull variants would be added.

It'll be great to have fully controllable Soviet, British, French, Italian and German submarines in the future! Also won't it be awesome if there's a Pacific campaign? A conflict involving China, USSR, Taiwan, the two Koreas, Japan and Australia besides the US sounds epic.

For the '84 campaign, a nice addition would be Swedish and Norwegian subs. They were designed to protect their land.
I love the Sjöormen class, certainly one of the best submarine of its time.

Swedish subs got wireguided torpedoes in 1964 (type 61 came in 65) but they had no seeker heads and where for use against surface targets. And i think 40cm anti submarine torpedoes where state of the art in the navy in 1964.

In 1984 Sweden and Norway (which used the same torpedo) had just gotten a brand new hydrogen peroxide torpedo that's wire guided and has a passive seker (type 613). And a more modern ASW torpedo.

Unless we have a battery system implemented in a future version (I'm sure it will be somehow, because there are just too many cool D/E subs in this world) Japanese subs will just play like slower, more fragile US subs with smaller magazines. Their subs during much of this period even visually resembled US subs. The Asashio-class - at least superficially - resembled the Seawolf (SSN-575) or a GUPPY II boat. The Uzushio-class was very much like the Barbel-class. The Yūshio-class and Harushio-class submarines looked almost like a 2/3-scale Sturgeon-class (lacking the vertical fins on the sternplanes). Only with the Oyashio-class of the 1990's did Japan really begin to have a 'style' all their own, and it was continued visually with the (quite sexy) Sōryū-class of the early 21st century.

I wanted to implement the Japanese subs and have all the raw stats (or as good as can be weaseled from Jane's and Conway's), but till you have to worry about power management, they won't have anything 'special' to offer over US boats.

You can't have a Cold War sub game with the Type 206 class Unterseeboot, either... though those iconic boats will have to wait till we can cram 8 tubes on a single boat. ;)

Pacific campagin is a good idea.

The Taiwanese were still operating a Balao or two during the cold war, weren't they? Pacific would really give a nice selection of units.

Were?
Hell, they still ARE operating them RIGHT NOW!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cutlass_(SS-478) - oldest submarine on active duty!!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Tusk_(SS-426) - probably regulated to training

Wow- Cutlass isn't even looking too shabby:

Would be an interesting challenge to use her in a campaign against PRC..

Well, in a 1984 campaign, where the vast majority of the ChiCom sub fleet is Type 033s (Romeo), with a few early Type 035s (Ming) knocking about, I'd say that the old 'Hai Shih' might stand a bit of a chance with some acoustic-homing torps (Italian models IIRC) and a very patient and skilful skipper aboard.

Any time after that, she'd be mere bait as the more advanced versions of the Type 035s started to come online. I doubt very seriously that she'd last more than about 35 seconds in combat, as she's probably loud enough compared to the Type 039 and Type 039A classes that they could probably find her with a glass pressed against the hull. :-(

P.S.: I once read that she stil uses the original TDC for establishing solutions.

Honestly, I feel like a pacific campaign would not fit the theme of the game which purports to be a remake of Red Storm Rising. And that game had a very specific theme of naval WW3 in the Norwegian Sea. If you expand Cold Waters to basically play anywhere in the world then you are basically doing a remake of Dangerous Waters.

How about the Dutch submarines? Zwaardvis class where great subs!

While this is a 'spiritual successor', we should not limit our hopes (or modding aims) to the original. Clancy also wrote "The Bear and the Dragon" you know.
I hope Killerfish turns this into a good modern sub sim covering everything post WWII.

there's already some serious modding effort going on over at subsim. You can already play almost all the Russian subs. Eventually maybe even a Russian campaign.
