The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

Do I need a guide?
The game told me i needed to make good choices to get AP points. Wrong choices would net no ap, no rank, no benefit and perhaps conquenese.

So do i need a guide while playing this game?

It helps sure but it isn't entirely necessary in my honest opinion. The big thing is their are hidden quest that net you extra AP points you only get those quests triggered by talking to certain people but their is no indication these quests exist. Thus if you talk to everyone at least twice you are much more likely to get the maximum ap points barring a few unique exceptions

To be honest it is entirely up to you.

If you are completionist guide is recommended. If you find playing game "blind" more fun, do it without guide.

I dont care for guides per say unless i hit a brick wall. But i also dont wantto get 1/2 way through game and few AP points because choices I made may not give out AP's hence hold me back. Seems AP is important.

Are they ? By getting higher ranks (AP) you are getting various items and by getting 430/440 you are getting Valedictorian achievement. By getting A0 or A1 rank you will get other items at the beginning of ToCS2 as carryover. It's not like it will change your gameplay or anything like that.

In addition at the end of each day it is easy to tell that you got max AP achievable on that day or not (by reaction of Towa, Sara) If you got other rank than S at the end of each chapter that means you missed some AP. During game there will be some questions that require knowledge from books/bonding event etc.

As you see playing ToCS without guide is 100% possible.

AP gets you rewards, but none are necessary to finish the game. Use a guide if you care about missing side stuff, but there is nothing story-relevant really tied to AP.

I didn't play with a guide the first time around. I'm on NG+ now, playing with a guide to collect some of the things I missed. Frankly I don't like to talk to everyone, so a guide helps cut down a bit on the overall amount of useless conversation. I wasn't able to hit S rank on any of the chapters beforehand with AP, although some of that can be attributed to my unfamiliarity with the series (this is my first Trails game).

There's not too much of a difference playing with a guide and playing without in my experience, however I'd never be able to collect all the rare goodies without one.

Yup. As someone mention above, it adds more side stuff, like for example Anton (if some1 missed him from Sora no Kiseki SC), extra info about characters etc.

Given the sheer number of hidden quests (a quick count from the guide says it's 61AP), that is a truly formidable number. Congratulations.

Might aswell play on youtube then? There is literally no point in guides except to ruin a fun from game, especially since it's really easy game to get all done, there are like maybe one possible thing to miss for 1 AP, everything else you have a possibility to replay, since you will know that you have failed. Considering there is a 10 points handicap to get last rank it would be unlikely not to get it. Compared to trails in the sky SC where you had only 2 points i beilive? And some really reicky stuff, like winning battle 1vs5 or smth without even realizing you actually need to win it for BP.

There is like one truly hidden quest, where you need to speak twice to trigger it and one hidden action in one of the later chapters which you should be able to figure if you paid minimum attention to the previous day, everything else you just need to speak with characters once, unless you are lazy to speak with them you can't miss quests. Just keep to a general line that there is always 1 hidden quest per free day and 1 per field study and you will be fine without guide.

I think the first time you play you do not need to care about AP,just enjoy the story and the BGM.The second time you need a guide to enjoy the full game.

I find it's easy to accidently spoil myself when reading a guide, like seeing the name of a boss at the end of a page while scrolling. Even if the guide claims to be "spoiler-free" you're going to get at least minor spoilers from reading it. Up to you to what level you'll tolerate these.
