Cover and obstacles
I have a feeling the gameplay flow and feel would benefit from a more lenient than 1-tile rule as far as shooting over cover or crouched friendlies is concered.

It simply doesn't look nor feel right that with 1 tile distance, a relatively low wall already reduces the chances to hit at an enemy that is a max range of a rifle - we are not trying to hit their toes here and even those should be in full view from this angle.

The same is true for shooting over crouched friends.

One a separate yet related topic: recent titles like JA3 did a pretty good job at details like leaning out of full cover to take a shot when standing at the edge of a building's wall or similar cover or when crouched behind a half-cover wall - this feels good. And it looks awesome as well.

I'm aware this adds more logic to get programmed and new animations but I imagine it will work well enough to justify the effort put into it

I'm not sure but didn't the makers of JA3 have a nice big budget to play around with too?

They had a reasonable budget. And put tons of voice-acting in the game. Which isn't something that Xenonauts would hugely benefit from, the way I see it. Compared to that: a lean animation -> not having to step a whole tile out of cover in order to shoot and then step back into cover after shooting - big yes. This combined with fixing the odd-angle problem (which seems to be on the way) would lift this up from "a bit awkward" to convincing.

Like was said every other time this has come up: If you can do it, so can enemies. Do you really want aliens to camp in corners shooting you with impunity while you cannot shoot back? It used to be that way, and people complained, so the devs changed it. It cannot be both ways.

There is no impunity. If an enemy leans out of cover, they are partially out of cover and subject to overwatch fire. That is not the same as "shooting through a corner of full cover"

Then it wouldn't be cover. Why not just remove all walls from the game? I'm sure you'd have more fun if it was just a line of bad guys and a line of your guys and you took turns shooting. Oh wait they have those, they are called auto-battlers. Xenonauts is not an auto-battler in case you missed that.
