I don't want to lose my plane and risk my crew I grinded so hard to upgrade just because of one destroyed wheel.
I've lost very few Lancasters to one wheel landings (I'd say about 50% chance for it not to be written off). Worth mentioning that losing certain chunks of the plane doesn't count as it being destroyed, such as the wingtip.
With the b17 however... yeah, I've managed to salvage one from a 1 gear landing, but the rest have been losses. Which sucks nards considering the lowered income in that campaign.
On the other hand, I've been getting guder at flying and maneuvering, and it's true that with more active input gear losses are way less frequent. Seems like the b17 campaign is addressing the facerolliness of the OG campaign by being more micro intensive regardless of equipment, it's just unfortunate that they're pairing that with being harder to recover from losses.
Burning is another story, but burning doesn't count anyway, as long as your crew survived the impact, it's good.
I just survived another single gear landing, this time without losing the plane, and yet another crash-landing, with 7 of the 9-men crew down (and a malfunctioning hydraulics so I don't think there's a working gear), and everyone, including the plane, was saved. There wasn't even a SAR dice, they just returned like nothing happened, including some of the guys well past their killing timer...
The mechanics for landings have been altered for all aircraft, not just the B17. If you've had any craft survive one wheel or belly landings, it's certainly a fluke -- me nor anyone else I've known has managed to get any aircraft to successfully land with damaged gear after the new update. Losing any of the gear means that the entire crew bails and the bomber is a loss, hope you have money for a new one. It's odd because landing without gear was a fairly common occurance especially on RAF Woodbridge which had an extra long and thick runway designed just for this purpose -- if every bomber that lost one of its landing gear had detonated on contact with the ground, there would've been many more bombers lost.
"New update" meaning the b17 one, I assume, because I've done two full playthroughs in the weeks and to the day leading to the USAAF dlc and I must've easily landed no less than 5 Lancasters on a wheel without crashing them (only one belly landing which was indeed a loss).
Worth going through the vanilla campaign to check it out I guess. Will also look into the changelog, surely something like that has been noted there.
Usually the side missing landing gear loses half a wing, but the fuselage (assuming it's not taken red/black damage already) almost always stays intact.
If you really need to, you could always have your crew bail out before you land, and take the L on the bomber itself.
By the way, and hilariously enough, I just had my first belly landing on a runway in 50 hours. It's been on a B17, and I didn't destroy the plane (bombardier didn't make it, but hey, at this point I'll take that over having to refit a plane.)
