as for ray wanting to die, that always seemed like an immutable desire to me. she initially wanted to die to avoid culpability and escape what she had done, but by the end of the game, it seems like she wants to die to gain closure. it's a measured decision. their entire dynamic is predicated on that promise, so i can't imagine either of them would just drop it and go their merry way, but it also has functioned as kind of a pretense for their companionship. i think we're supposed to understand their bond as temporary, with a fixed end point (ray's death). these are the terms of the relationship.
i think there are 2 potential post-game narratives:
1. they escaped and he keeps saying he'll kill her and then not doing it. so, their relationship begins to expand beyond the promise, opening the door for a non-suicidal ray (which could be the new end-point). i think this would be a "happy end."
2. he killed her. this would be the "true end" to me. neither of them appear to have changed their minds on the matter. we just really want them to. i imagine it would be a very emotional affair, in which zack is no longer a nameless executioner but a friend who understands her and is willing to give her what she needs--peace. but i think it would be a sort of fulfillment for the two of them, the natural end point to their story.
edit: i still stand by this, but someone told me there's a popular theory that the story is a manifestation of ray's guilt and suicidal ideation and that the ending represents her accepting suicide. i don't know that i buy it, but i wanted to add, lmao.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for happy endings where the right people live to see another day and all that, but the overall story kinda...makes it hard for players to interpret the ending that way? like Faida said, the foundation of the entire game is this promise between them to kill and be killed. It's lasted throughout the episodes, through each floor. It's such a fundamental thing to both characters and the story in general that for it to suddenly change in the ending is hard to believe.
But, that's probably why the creator left it pretty open ended with just both of them disappearing from the room. Whether you wanted to make it into a happier ending where they both live or where they follow through with their promise, is all up to you. (Though I feel you, I kinda wish there was more to the ending to work with, even if it was just going into further detail as to how Zack ends up killing her or whatever)
I feel conflicted either way, because if I go with the former route, then I wonder how'd they live day to day?? Is Zack still killing around? Is Ray just sticking with him? But if I go with the latter route, then it's me questioning how Zack lives his life after killing Ray...is there a major change? Does he just keep on going the way he's always have?
In the end, even I'm still not sure how to interpret the ending and I kinda just wanna see other people's interpretations...I know its been out for a while with the japanese version but still not a lot of concrete info about this game are out there :/
Zack tells Ray he'll see her soon, and fulfills her wish. He then turns himself into the police (again) and gets executed so he can meet Ray in whatever afterlife they end up in.
As for how Zack escaped prison, he probably broke through the walls or something.
@Krakken4: Yeah, he is unbelievably tanky, still not the brightest and without a proper tool I don't think that he should be capable to just break out of prison, even with his abilities.
@atlesse: I'm pretty sure that Zack kills her at some point.. of course not immediately but a short time after.. maybe a few hours or days. I never expected a happy ending but this just felt incomplete somehow. Something is missing.. it doesn't feel like an open ending, more like something that simply wasn't finished.
@Aster: Thats one way to see it, but I don't think that Zack would want to die after he killed Ray. He already went through all lenghts to get out of the building and wanted to live despite the promise he made. I'd rather think that he might run off somewhere.. to eventually get caught and killed at some point, but not because he wants that to happen.
The ending itself is what still bothers me.. lets hypothetically think that things went a different way.
1.) Zack gets executed, this would leave Ray with her unfullfilled promise and the fact that she has to live despite what she did (even though she accepted it). This could lead to several paths: a) She looks for an other way to get killed without commiting suicide <-- no happy ending. Or b) she somehow has to cope with life and move on.. without ever being able to overcome her wicked nature.. maybe she even returns to killing people. <-- no happy ending either. Or several other ways I can't think of right now because its waay to late for this ^^
2.) Ray didn't survive being shot. This leaves Zack with an unfullfilled promise that he has to live with.. would have been interesting to see how he would cope with that.
3.) Making Zacks escape more believable by not putting him in the death row cell but letting him escape before questioning or something similar <-- this would make the actual ending way more possible.
There are for sure more ways you can think of, these are just a few I see more fitting than the actual ending.. maybe multiple ends would have been a good idea ^^
It's really late, so there might be a lot of typos :P
That said, I think the ending is a nice compromise. You could interpret what happens to be anything. Whether or not Zack kills Ray afterwords is up to the viewer. They could have gone on the lamb, escaping the State-- probably to Canada or something, and live a somewhat fine life (though im sure Zack would still be a killer, the mental damage done to him is too much to just vanish through some little girl tbh) You could also imagine that when Ray dies, Zack goes and gets put to death, and they get reborn and meet each other and everythings peachy. I think that's the best kind of ending you could get with a game like this tbh. They're both beyond being saved, but their promise gave them something to feel a sense that their birth had meaning, especially for Ray, but also for Zack as well. Sure, killing someone might seem selfish and messed up, but he was trying his hardest to grant someone elses wish in the way they wanted it to be, he helped her be at peace.
On the whole, escaping Maximum Security thing, Zack is stupidly strong. He can break through rubbel of all things. If three inmates IRL can escape by cutting some steel pipes and go through the plumbing tunnels, and then use some bed rope to scale the building (this seriously happened almost a year ago btw) Zack could definately do that too or some sort of other way. The only thing I felt was a hole was how Zack and Ray both kept their weapons. Ray had nothing to really hide a knife like that in that wouldn't have gotten taken away, and Zack was taken in by the police. Weapon searches are like the first dang thing they do. It'd have made more sense if he had a different weapon.
Sorry for the text wall!!
What it bothers me is how does it feel Ray with her desire of die all the time, she'll feel bad about it and that would be selfish wanting that ending. It's being said that her mental state improved at the end of the game but what if she was pretending and lying all along? (It's a fact tha she lied, though) We don't know if the therapist asked her for the right questions to help her and with Zack she got to believe in herself rather than God or anyone else, it's possible that staying with him is good for her. And maybe a therapy of a few months aren't enough after some time of hard abuse???
How will Zack feel killing the only person he appreciates? He developed emotions during the game and that's why he wouldn't be able to kill her.
I have to agree with you on this because you can tell, Zack does't exactly WANT to kill Ray, it's like if I were asked to kill my best friend by my best friend. I wouldn't WANT to do it but I would if that's what they really wanted.
And on the Zack breaking through the walls is quite obviouse because I mean...this is Zack we're talking about
and i'm also sure he didn't really want to kill her... as well as she didn't really want to die, for that matter >< ^^ - maybe in the beginning, but not later on. i think she was insisting on him keeping that oath so he would stay with her >< ^^
well, i'm a sucker for happy endings, when they involve characters i like (and i like those two), so i choose to think all of the above >< ^^. and i choose to think that they didn't die in the end, either >< ^^. he just helped her escape ^^.
and i'm just gonna ignore how unbelievable it was for Zack to escape from prison >< ^^
That said, here's my take!
While I don't doubt Zack's impressive ability to survive and the possibility that he might be able to escape... as we've seen in the game, he's not the brightest at figuring out escape plans. MAYBE he could survive an execution, but the nurse said "sentenced to death" I think? Couldn't that mean that it hasn't been carried out, but could happen whenever, since the nurse was telling her.
Anyway, the nurse didn't know anything about an escape, so the breakout must have happened very recently. (Or as you say, it *was* carried out, but ... didn't take.)
...
That's a possibility, but...
There's an alternative. Someone who has the kind of pull to create a "tower of death" in the city and go about unnoticed. Someone who might be admitted to see a prisoner before his sentence would be carried out. Somehow, I think That reverend is still free at large. He was the one who told Zach how to save her... And I imagine, he is the one who gave him the means to escape and find Ray. (Didn't one of the reports say they found "a body" in the wreckage?)
We know he definitely saw something in Zach, even if his "Wings" were gone. (I question if the reverend is even human... honestly.) So, supplying Zach with a new Scythe, and the means to fulfill their oath wouldn't be so far fetched. I doubt he would "save" them just to let them meet a boring fate.
So, if that's the case... the only question left, is what becomes of them at the end. At last she was able to smile and he killed her just like that? Carrying her body away? Not so sure about that.
There was blood... But, certainly not as much blood as when she was shot.
While this is illogical... I imagine them just up and vanishing. There was no body left behind. With blood left behind, they can only imagine the worst, since they believe Zach to be her parents killer, I think. I imagine them disappearing into the night... ascending and becoming Angels of Death!! A scary tale to frighten children.
... Or at least find peace in a death of their choosing, and no one else's.
Zack may not be the brightest person but he is exceptionally strong. And prior to becoming a floor master he managed to elude the police several times. He is a serial killer after all, this means he committed more than two crimes without being catched. There's also the oath he swore to Ray, we witnessed during the collapsing of the building how much stronger it made him, allowing him to overcome his fear of fire. I believe him capable of escaping a high security prison.
Regarding the ending, I don't think Zack and Ray killed themselves by jumping. The sound we hear at the end is that of the door being destroyed and the police barging in.
Though a happy ending wouldn't make much sense to be honest, Ray would never forgive herself for what happened to her parents, for what she did. If the therapy really worked then that would only stronger her wish to die. A mentally ill person might not care about what they did, but a relatively sane person on the other hand...
Personally I think they'll stay together until Rachel manages to show Zack a truly happy face, then the latter will kill her, granting them both what they wanted. Maybe after killing her Zack will take his own life, not wanting to live without the only person that considered him human and not a monster. Who knows.
This game is a masterpiece.
Also, there was a lot of blood when they showed the room had been cleared, but when he initially broke the window there was quite a bit seeping down the side. Which also makes me think he may have been hurt from escaping, or if you remember his room, there was a lot of bloody bandages. Perhaps his old wounds still break open and bleed? It's a bit much for that though.
Anyway! I agree it's all left up to the player. It's an open ended storyline with hints as to what could happen. Now if he didn't kill her, there could be a continuation which would also be fun. Since this game was originally a manga, I'm going to see if I can hunt that down to see what happened there too.
