growing clan?

is it possible to grow by making babies or do i have to find lost apes?
ive gone through a few generations now and i keep getting stuck with a bunch of old farts and 2 adult males and 2 adult females which makes 4 babies but the babies always end up as 2 boys and 2 girls so the clan never grows

You can have 6 elders, 6 adults and 6 babies at a time, but each female will only have 2 babies during her life, so if you want the maximum amount you need at least 3 females with 3 unrelated males.

You don't even need 3 males. One male can father all the babies in your clan as long as he's not related to any of the females. The game only tracks siblings through the mother and doesn't track grandparents at all. It's a common tactic in the first half of the game to have one elder male impregnate all the females every generation. The reason you use an elder is because, by doing this every generation, you will always have two elder males who are not related to any of the adult females. It saves a ton of time on matchmaking.

Didn't know that, I always have the full ensemble with my monkes in monogamous relationships with age appropriate mates (not for any ideological reason, I just like having a full, neat clan).
