My apes don't swing on vines and branches

Is there some trick I'm missing? When I watch the walkthrough videos they make it look so simple to jump into a tree and grab the branches with both hands and swing to another branch or vine. I just fall right through, usually ending up in broken bones. I can't do anything with the vines at all.

I've been playing the game for nearly two weeks and otherwise I seem to be figuring things out.

When you jump to the branches hold onto the "A" button if using the controller (or your equivalent jump key). If you don't hold the button or key you will fall through.

Mouse and keyboard is Spacebar. :)
