Basalt Chopper?

I've tried hitting basalt together then granite and obsidian. Basalt always breaks. I haven't had a timing issue with the chime with any other item. Am I doing something wrong?

You have a very short margin for error in hitting the rocks together. Until you unlock a skill for increasing that, you have to get the timing just perfect.

Like attacking/dodging you're going to hear a very low~subtle DING noise, the moment you hear that noise is when you hit the rock

Before I noticed the chime, I'd just do a count for how long to hold the hit button. There's no penalty for hitting too early, but it breaks stuff if you hit too late.
If you're releasing the hit button just as the chime dings, try doing a count and hitting a bit earlier.

It also seems like altering stuff is a learned skill and you'll fail the first few times you try even if you time it perfectly. It took a long time before I could make sharp stick or get a fish with it even after I knew what I was doing. Now I can manage pretty consistantly.

Was having the same, no issues with the other rocks, basalt broke everytime unless I was using it to bash another rock ie making a useless granite grinder.

Then i kept trying hold for a second then release and the worst that happens is you don't advance the construction. Still broke the rock the first time doing it that way but second time it worked

You can try releasing just before the beep/click sound. Its a rough one to master.

It's the same for all crafting of that type. Hold for a second then release and it works.
