The game is set in the comics.
Yes Kenny, Lee, Clementine etc were not in the comic. But the game is set within the canon of Robert Kirkman's series that means characters alive in the comic are
1) Not going to die
2) Act in ways which deviate from how they act in the comic.
They might be cameos but that doesn't mean anything. Yes, Telltale are telling their own story within the confines of the canon and aren't going to move outside of that.

There were reports during the development of this season about how Telltale is trying to bring the games closer to the comic and television show stories. Maybe the most shocking moment in the final trailer has been Jesus' reveal. While many weren't expecting his appearance, there is hardly a negative word to be said about the prospect.
Jesus has been a fan favorite of those who read #TheWalkingDead comic books and is becoming a favorite of those watching the show—here's hoping his intelligent, friendly vibes bring a similar degree of lovability to the Telltalle Walking Dead universe.
There has been a lot of debate about where we are in the larger timeline based on Jesus' presence in A New Frontier. The more popular comments on reddit indicate that this story must be occurring before Jesus meets Rick and the rest of the crew. There's also been some speculation about a Negan appearance based on the last shot in the trailer. Maybe Jesus is the glue that holds the parallels in this universe together.
