We had to combine dozens of classes into three, for game launch. Perhaps certain equipment was not actually intended for that class historically, but for the purposes of balance and FUN, we've allowed the player to upgrade the class to cover their weakeness.
Ie: Thraex and Retiarius both get shields to combat their very low defense, while murmillo upgrades to a long-sword to combat his low reach, and ditches the shield because he needs two hands for the zweihander anyway.
We're currently expanding available classes with DLC but we value fun over historical accuracy.
Completely inaccurate.
I'm kidding, game's great.
