So in short Spear>Aggro>AI (I think those 3 are the most important thing to watch, but spear is way better against shield/sword. Not sure but 2 handed weapon might counter spear.)
As far as sizing up opponents I've been estimating gear, and looking at stats. If I don't have anyone with generally higher stats than the opponent then I'll sacrifice some slaves.
Honestly, the game moves so fast that it's hard to pin down the Min-Maxing right now after a couple plays. Like some other Rogue-likes, it will take a lot of research runs to figure out what works best with what as far as the nitty gritty of all the stats. Plus the Dev is going to keep balancing I'm sure.
I had my best fighter ask for his freedom, but never had anyone else I could spare. That lone warrior stood for his former Domina and fell in a blaze of glory before she herself succumbed to her wounds. It was a beautiful story.

lol that was hilarious, you must have had automatic yield researched so all your guys surrendered and you were stuck fighting them yourself. Good fight and win though.
let domina do everything.
Also when you have thraxes only (shield guys) get pole arm defense from the doctore. This helps a lot. Also I tend to focus on 1 guy until he is beast then I move on to the next dude. And when a great gladiator dies mid game, I wouldn't rlly spend the money on a peasant but instead find a good one from the legate instead. It seems to be more affordable and they do better since the bought gladiators often already have victories under their belt.
As for hires, in my opinion, I have been immediately hiring faber, agent and medicus right from the start. Set the faber, medicus and doctore on auto and they will heal, equip and train your fighters and you don't have to do anything. Agent is great because if you are low on cash you can assign him to spy on the legate or magistrate and sell the juicy info to the other while increasing their favor. Once it is high enough, request them to sponsor one of your fighters and you will no longer have to pay for their food and water. Also use the agent to steal armor and weapons from the army and you get free upgrades of equipment for your fighters. If they are caught no biggie agents are cheap to replace.
I have been experimenting early game with buying high level slaves that have high hp but zero fighting experience and focusing their training on their ability to fight and defend themselves. I'm still seeing how it pans out. I will let you know.
Also stockpile food and water as much as possible. I had a scenario last night where a flood came to the city and because of it I could no longer purchase water at the market. On day six my domina thirst to death thus ending the game.
Hades ??? You pagan !
