Well, obviously, mostly for the jokes. But for the story you don't really need to, they recap the finale in the beginning.
Do yourself a favor and play both.

No. The game is mostly contained. Though the first game is just as good and you should play it.

It's a direct sequal and many of the old characters show up. So it's not a bad thing to play the first fitst.

I'd definitely recommend playing the first one!!!
You will miss a lot and won't understand a few jokes and some story stuff!
Besides that, the first one is AMAZING :D

First game is a very easy recommendation. It is one of the best metroidvanias I have played, and I don’t even like beat-em-ups.

I'd recommend playing the first game not because it's particularly necessary, but because it's so GOOD.

After about 8 hours of G2, I'd recommend starting with G1 STCE because if you beat G2 first, STCE would be a cakewalk even on hard mode.

No, but I do think playing the first makes the sequel all the more better.
