...the campaign is the story. It's SUPPOSED to be "linear". There can be branching paths in some games, but what do you expect from a story? I don't find it boring at all, but I guess I probably play this game a whole lot differently, too.
...they're totally different games that take place a decade or two apart, and part of the same continuity. Why would you limit yourself to just one? Here's some advice: gamers whine a hell of a lot. You might not want to take their "dis story sux" or "dis gam sux" crap too seriously, because from what I've experienced, as long as you don't rush through them, they're both well worth playing and they aren't SUPPOSED to be identical experiences. It's a different world, post apocalypse, than it was as the apocalypse was just starting. The game reflects that scenario.
People seem to be SEVERELY exaggerating how "bad" this game is. I think it's incredibly fun and immersive, especially after the most recent update, unless you're just playing the whole robotic "set rally point / guidance > go from point a to b on map > pay attention to nothing but shiny goal marker > repeat" thing. I've been playing it much like I would navigate such a place in real life (if I could parkour without instantly killing myself) (including taking on only one or two requests / quests at a time and not fast traveling) and it's been a ton of fun.
Unless you're just here to complain and the game isn't really what you're in it for like some gamers seem to be, I dunno how that is, but I think you're doing yourself a disfavor by arbitrarily limiting yourself to one or the other because you "heard it was bad"
....what's that saying, opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one and they all stink. It's probably best to form your own, and the game at the very least, is worth trying. The critics upset that it isn't exactly like DL1 make it sound like it's a venereal disease or something. No guys, it's a zombie virus.
I think both games are pretty amazing, for the record.
Playing with minimal or no UI - I highly recommend at least somewhat limiting your UI. Just something to try that might improve your experience greatly, unless you're just a "cheev hunter" or similar type of gamer, then I imagine you'd hate it, haha.
Thats alot of text :) but i think your missing what i was asking, i have finished the story of dying light 2 and found it to be quite boring however the game play, combat, parkour was fun but that only last so long and then it just gets monotonous. my question is, is it worth playing since i beat the campaign? There does not appear to be anything worth while to do expect the daily bounties thing which does not appeal to me.
Ironically i have never finished dying light 1 story..........
If you're not a completionist, or in it for the story, or multiplayer, you can still ignore all the standard (if not generic) rpg grind mechanics and just hack'n'slash. Although, I still find DL1 more satisfying in this regard.
Then wait for story DLC and eventually for event more appealing to you.
