it started happening to me more and more often as i was progressing in the game

You then have to escape him. I think the seizures are a prelude to the effects of the experiments done on Aiden and the introduction of the inhibitors. Basically, whatever happens to him was kickstarted by that major head banging he got from Walt in the tunnels and the newly introduced inhibitors running rampant in his system. Why it happens when he sleeps is because (most likely) most players sleep the night away when he would likely have been experiencing some interesting side effects had he not gotten to the light at the bed before sleeping. Just my thoughts. I have this theory because the seizures didn't start until after that mission. Now they happen whenever I try to sleep.
