DL1 still has the most satisfying combat and ragdollphysics i ever experianced in a video game..
imagine you build something like this, have 7 years of time to improve and deliver a product that is actually worse... this wont go in my head... there must went something terribly wrong during developement... or maybe the people were not competent enough to see the difference...
i asked the exact same question with battlefield 2042... dice was known for superp quality and love of detail in their games... and look at the product they released, it was absolutely laughable... even the 6 year old BF1 had better animations and more love of detail in every aspect...
Its been 7 years, you would expect some kind of ideas from the team on how to improve and deepen the experience, but instead everything is simplified and more repetitive.
Nights arent dangerous anymore, no guns or throwable weapons, lower res textures, human enemy AI as easy to abuse as ever, no new zombies, no unique weapons, no special weapon mods, no collecting of blueprints, less zombies on the streets, no new gore system, no cars, no explosives anymore (the way leveling work means that those that are in game dont work) and so on.
Character models look better in some ways, but the textures are just way, way too low res, you can tell it was made with ps4. so 10 year old hardware in mind and there are no pc only high res textures.
I feel the focused on the wrong things, there are some great missions in the game, but a lot of the are miss able, and are easy to lock yourself out of, and the new streamlined and simplified gameplay for a wider audience just isnt as good as the first game.
Most i miss is special weapons and blueprints, there really is 0 point in exploration if there is nothing to find. No secrets and nothing unique.
The fact the upgrade costs are insane and you will never be able to upgrade anything makes every explosive, molotovs, and buffs completely useless.
For me, the biggest issue was unlikeable characters. Even Aiden himself is a big baby that cries over the radio constantly because he is scared of his own shadow.
I can't go much over the other characters without spoilers, but I disliked all of them. All except Aitor which I found to be the only NPC worth anything.
90% of the characters you meet either treat you like dirt or want to take advantage of you in some way. Maybe that's what people become during the apocalypse, but I don't consider it fun.
This is just my opinion. I'm sure some people like Lawan or think Aiden is badass. Good for them I say! They could look past it, while I could not.
Am i the only one who found it insanely creepy with how old she is and hitting on Aiden?
A 40 something year old and Aiden who is supposed to be 18 or something, its creepy and disgusting.
Also what sense does it make? Aiden and Lawan were both Waltz subjects, and she was too young for nightrunners, how can she be over twice Aidens age? How can she be one of Hakons concubines. She ether 40 and was well into her 20ties when the fall happened, or she suffered rapid aging or something and was a child when she was with Hakon, the second option is just disgusting with what it implies.
Ether way the timeline makes 0 sense for her, she should have been a young girl, and one that wasnt connected to Hakon, would give some emotional core to the plot rather than a creepy groomer wine aunt vibe, someone call the cops on her.
Yea I hear ya, I didn't want to believe the reviews. My first thought when I started playing was if it aint broke, don't fix it (why Techland decided to go the route they did is beyond me). They took a gamble and hoped people would like an almost completely different game.
Regardless, I still think it's a good game (bugs and all), just don't expect Dying Light 1.
I don't think I will ever play this.
PhysX did look really cool. So does RT right now. I wonder when nvidia will drop it. And when will their next fad start.
Hakon had to be not much older than Aiden in the original script, probably 25, Lawan 23, Aiden 21, making him the youngest but all 3 in the same age range, and Frank would treat Lawan as his adopted doughter and Hakon as his succesor and son almost.
Seems both Lawan and Hakon got aged up 20 years at some point in the production which brakes the games timeline.
Thats just an ignorant take, all games will switch to diffrent types of ray tracing, the problem is that now ray tracing use used as a badly applied screen filter instead of having the game made grounds up for it. It runs bad since you are basically running the game twice, once in rasterization mode, then another time in ray tracing mode, and finally overlay both results.
Quake RTX and Metro Exodus EE are the only 2 ray traced games i know of that dont fully rasterize the shading first and only draw the edges and colors.
Anyway it was obviously it wont find much addoption this gen, RTX cards are PC only, and nobody makes high budget games for the PC.
RTX is a nvidia propetiary gpu system to do Ray Tracing, and ray tracing is a way to render 3d. What nvidia does with RTX will have no impact on adoption of path and ray tracing, this will happen regardless.
As for nvidia RTX i expect 2 more gpu generation before it gets dropped, it will have no point as RT in games becomes the norm a special RTX system for it will have no purpose anymore.
The "spiritual successor" to Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood, has similar issues. The original is still superior in many different ways. It's not nostalgia . There's a really good video showing a lot of the differences between the two. Maybe there is a good video on YouTube illustrating the differences between DL1 & 2 now.
Another minor gripe with Dying Light 2, which features a different main protagonist, but he sounds exactly the same to me as Kyle Crane. Bizarre choice, unless there is a plot reason I haven't learned yet.
As far as ray tracing, I turned it on for 20 seconds and then turned it off forever.
Load up DL1 and it looks and feels far better in pretty much every way imo.
PD: I saw that video, "proof that valve carried Left 4 Dead development" or something like that by crowbat
