How do you know if this game is saving your progress???

I just got this game a couple nights ago. Played about 45min the first night, last night I had to redo about 30min of progress because it started me off at the first safe house. And just now was going to play for a bit but then it started me off at the same early safe house from the prologue! I turned on a windmill last night and slept in it thinking that was the way to save the game. I am returning the game because the save function is ridiculously dumb and I don't want to keep redoing parts I've already done.

Saving takes place every time the auto-save icon appears. This usually occurs when crossing various checkpoints on the map, getting quests or exiting the game via the pause menu.
