Most mods have "read me" added to the files or had some info on the "subscribe/download" page. Thats from what i have seen with nexus and steam workshop.
Other way of mods as "file edits" you can do yourself if you drop any script-generated file to notepad++ window and play with it. That needs a lot of understanding for how some of the files and their values work, but if you have the time and nerves for it you will make some very good changes to the core gameplay. Allways make a backup before doing any edit.
Make sure you back up your saves or your game files, as some of the mods may ruin it, but it really is a hit or miss. I am playing with mods and I can advise you a few things:

1
- When you download a mod, always check the Readme.txt

2
- There is a limit of only 8 (or smth like that mod file) - They are named datapak1, datapak2, datapak3, etc etc. Once you get to datapack9, you cannot put any more numbers (datapak10, 11, the game will not see them)

3
- Make a list, a notepad, which mods do you download and what will be their datapak number. Most mods may have the same datapak number, in this case you will need to change the number so you can put the files there. For this I suggest that you keep[ track of which mod which number is, in case you want to get rid of it or the mod is causing an issue.

4
- When you download a mod DO NOT download multiple at once and apply them at once and then start the game. ALWAYS download 1 mod, start the game, check if it works, then feel free to close the game and download another.
That is in case the mod is causing an error in the game (i had such errors, as dying as I spawn, unable to dismantle weapons, etc)

5
- If you want to have more mods downloaded than the 9 files, you can actually combine the files of 2 mods: Make sure you do not put same files as mod1 into mod2! I suggest you google how to do it, in nexus mod there is a guide for it.

If you want some more help, reply to my comment or add me in friends or type on my profile
