I think you still need to give bows and crossbows some advantages over guns because arrows are projectiles. They are susceptible to distance, travel speed and gravity, where as guns ignore those factors due to hitscan property. Guns also have better rate of fire, so guns are superior in terms of Damage per Second. Elemental arrows are meaningless if the enemy is dead.
Regarding ammo, it definitely needs some tweaks and fixes. It makes no sense that players cannot have more than 1 stack in their inventory. Worst of it all, ammo cannot be transferred to player stash. The devs seem adamant on pushing players to do Survivor missions, as vendor Jai is our best source of ammo
I enjoy sacrificing the broken co-op play for the ability to edit some very important strings and fix what feels broken or just wrong. Getting like 1000 smg round and shooting the dam.n thing single shot only makes its existence justified. Aiming for the brain for that sweet one shot kill is hard to do here, beause the 99 twitches every zombie has in its animations are very nice to watch (those do make the "dead" zombies feel more alive than the living npc in the game) but very bad to counter or even try to adapt to. The gun aiming is floaty, and i like that (it gives the guns some weight), but again trying to hit multiple zeds around you in the head in a succession is a bullet wasting mechanic.
I would so love for the rate of fire to make it have better DPS, I really do. Issue is Crossbows with the legend level bonus do about 1600 damage per bolt with 4 bolts in each mag. That means that you would need 10-12 bullets from almost every gun besides the shotgun, to all hit in a row order to make up the same amount of damage as a full crossbow magazine. This is with the legend level bonus and without any ranger gear, mind you. With ranger gear there would be no point in carrying a gun, especially since you can carry about 300 bolts and craft them easily for cheap.
The shotgun's main issue drawbacks are the slow reload speed and low ammo capacity, but also the ridiculous amount of spread.
One of the biggest issues for me mainly is that if you fight stronger enemies like Volatiles, they have i-frames every time they dodge and/or stagger. This means that you could be blasting one with the military rifle, and at least half the bullets can go to waste even though they should've hit. You could try to use it as a crowd control weapon instead, but as hitman_2 mentioned, the zombies move around a lot and its not the easiest with the floaty aiming to mow them all down. You'll run out of ammo *very* quick that way.
If what you said is true, it’s a huge oversight from the devs. Firearms are ranged weapons and should be boosted by ranger gear.
Agree with the rest of your reasoning.
