I travel as if it were daytime (but faster and focused on where I'm going) because getting sidetracked often leads to a chase. Stagnation kills.
When DL2 first released Techland didn't have roaming volatiles in mind. Seeing as how this game's entire history has been, I'd chalk the bugginess up to rushed half-baked design.
2) sneak. turn off your flashlight. Throw coins or decoys if they're in your way. They can't see through bushes. Couch or walk if you're near them as running make noises that attract them
