They're never the best, but are well-rounded weapons that deliver more impact than 1handers and are faster and drain less stamina than 2handers, so they're decent choices earlier in the game. Later on when you get better gear that reduces you melee stamina drain and increases stamina regen, long weapons become less effective than either 1 or 2 handed weapons, because 1h will out-dps them all day long, and 2h have the advantage of unblockable light attacks that don't get stuck on chunky or armored enemies.
