I don't think playing with friends from steam is implemented yet
What I will say is that Crane is more memorable... why you may ask? Because no one cares nor remembers Aiden's last name. It's always Kyle Crane vs Aiden, not Kyle Crane vs. Aiden Caldwell.
We don't even know what surviving post Dying Light - The Following countrysides' even entails. How many safe zones with uv light are there? Was Aiden traveling large swaths of distances at night? Were the Volatiles as fast as those in the following (they could keep up with vehicles). As it stands nothing really reinforces Aiden as a competent combatant and survivalist prior to our playthrough other than he's traveled a ridiculous amount of distance. Which is supposed to be challenging I guess, but never explained why.
Compared to Crane we have a general idea with cutscenes, and his original GRE career path. You wouldn't send an untrained weakling into a hostile quarantine zone and expect them to succeed and return your top secret file, would you?
