Why didn't DL2 become as popular as DL1? Why are the reviews so much worse?
What do you guys think? It is still a good game but 78% vs 98% is rather big!

Cause it is nowhere near as polished, immersive, innovative and technologically advanced as was the first one for it's time. In fact it even gone backwards in many aspects (some are actually acknowledged by devs).

Lot of reasons really. Dying Light 1 is pretty much ahead of its time for its starting franchise. Dying Light 2 falls flat in a lot of things. Still not a bad game though.

> Why didn't DL2 become as popular as DL1? Why are the reviews so much worse?

because they deleted Chris Avellone's story out of the game gutting it to the point where the story was utterly incomprehensible. Chris is not a sexual predator and its disgusting that Techland dropped him and his material like they did.

Sure DL2 combat and parkour are good but it's the world that the story creates that I come back for. Its just so bare, boring and annoying.

Firstly the characters. Yes Rosario Dawson can act but I found her lines were glib and derivative. Jonah Scott should have not returned to voice Aiden. I found it incredibly confusing and jarring. New character new voice. Ultimately the story and his arc was just boring and unrelatable. I did not care for his character at all. Hell I didn't care for almost anyone in the game and the few characters I like had barely any role and arc.

Either way I just didn't care for the fish eye or the civilians. I wanted a world that I can build in. A world where I can fight back the zombies. Where there is a finite number of zombies and there is a benefit for clearing the streets. The progression was so logical. You clear the streets and only for harder mutated zombies from the sewers emerge because the street zombies were displacing them.

There should have been RPG elements in the game. Where you needed resources, food and water to keep the settelements fuinctioning. Inter-settlement trade, creating and defeniding trade routes.

And when you clear the city you could have some faction blow a whole in the wall that allows more zombies to pour in. We could have had a co-op world where we have to kill zillions of zombies.

The removal of guns did not make sense either. Whilst the inventory system is the worst one ever created in a game. I hate how your items get cut-off when you scroll through the list. It's so fricken annoying. The whole settlement building component of the game was stripped out. There is zero settlement building and the benefits ridiculous and pointless. Great, ropes all over the world that i never use because I'm a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ super man.

It's ironic because i roasted Cyberpunkhard when it came out after 10 hours of play before deleting it and refunding it thinking that at least DL2 would be satisfy that itch.

After all the fixes and mod improvements Cyberpunk is now a great game. It's story is good, there are branching arcs. There aren't utter nonsensical bs that makes no sense a'la the Colonol one and only mission at the despite being a pivotal overarching character and presense in the game. The end game of Cyberpunk is satisfying whilst the end-game for Dying Light is jarring, annoying and just plain broken.

I'm about one decision away from uninstalling Dying Light 2, which for me is a huge decision seeing that Dying Light 1 has lived on my computer since the day it released. The only way for Techland to save Dying Light is if they go out and get Max Brooks to write them a brand new DLC, or restore Chri's story and RPG elements back into the game and reboot it.

I just wish they bring the old ragdoll, a guy made a mod just puting 0 and 1 in the game lines, HOW the devs dont know how to do this? it's literaly in the game files, just make it work I guess ? I love the first game and I'm trying to love the second, but a lot of bugs today is making this impossible.....

DL2's gameplay is clunky, combat boring, inventory retarded. I didn't expect DL2 to be clone of DL1, but this mess? Best of all is delayed (or ignored at times) input (crouch, sense) to mask Denuovo womit

The original is a lot more fun, going out at night was more dangerous and taxing. The sequel is more like a parkour game.

Every man loses his control more than once in his lifetime. Techland sacrificed him for no good. There is no second thought that the ending story of DL2 could have been better, a much better. They should not have fired Chris Avellone, at least not for his tiny stubborn act.
Am sure he could have delivered something greater good, which definitely would have hit the story to the new heights.

Everyone here has already given you the correct answers but for a TLDR - The game fails on its basics from the first game (combat is an upgrade apart from the fact that parkour + combat doesn't actually connect or flow smoothly its either one or the other) and the game's original story got cut and now it feels like you're playing 2 different stories smashed into one story that's somehow makes DL1's story - the biggest flaw of the first game- look actually decent :/

Dying Light 2.1 Re-Released

I enjoy DL2 so I`d not agree that this is the only way to "save" a game that is pretty good to begin with.
That said, I fully support your ideas, they would make the game better, especially since the story truly feels a bit lackluster and rushed, something is a bit off.

Played on ps so here are my opinions
Combat is awful.
Weapons feel like they made of plastic even lvl 7 ones.
Cannot loot enemy weapons.
Lack of good firearms.
Story is low and does not connect to the first beside some hints that a guy named crane has existed.
World is not interesting.
World at night is FULL of non-roaming/still standing howlers wich act as some sort of zombie "police" - very annoying.
Hunters only come out at "wanted level 3?".
Coming across a hunter is almost a death.
Crafting system is fuxked up.
Upgrading is fuxked up.
Leveling system is somehow worse.
Parkour feels like someone else is fuxking with your controls.
They patched in some super annoying super zombie and humans wich release toxic clouds when killed wich will make every human morph into a runner exept of you of course.
And so much more i can't list right now because i uninstalled it one day after reinstalling it because i had hope that some of this was adressed but nope. This game failed hard and should not have ben released as a dying light title.

At the beginning you will think "woow this is going to be great experience" but as soon as you get into the city you notice that something is fishy. Fuxk techland for generating so much hype for sucha pile of ♥♥♥♥.

I still play dl1 and it is making so much more fun to me so thank you techland for the first one atleast.

They took away most things that made dying light 1 good in the first place....

They looked at their game...saw all the fun that players could have, saw the guns, the survival feeling...AND TOOK IT AWAY. Replacing it with Dying lights biggest weakness...an even more boring story mode and some "conflicts" between factions.

Don´t get me wrong...I like the idea of people surviving and having a chose...but in that game chose does hardly madder at all. They removed most shooting guns because...is too far in the future?! DUDE....a AK can survive up to 200 years and making guns is really f"cking easy. Their argument is "people forgot how to make them".... dumb.

And the last part....why I don´t even want to look at the game: the zombies
I LOVED Dying Light because of the city full of zombies. Standing on a car and trying to survive. Thinking how to cross a street without getting a horde on me.
In DL2 they are mostly in buildings? They hardly madder in the story? Like there are just there...the story just treats them like an extra.

It just doens´t have the survival feeling anymore...more like an arcade, mmo type game... They had to take the things that made the game great. Improve it and focus on the weaknesses. BUT THEY DID THE OPPOSITE! Basically removing zombies, removing guns and a whole cool system potential (the people that played Dead Island know what I´m talking about) and they said, they will focus on the story...witch they also screwed up...

Started to play a week ago, so no bugs or tech issues.
Have 20 hours in game and already hate every character in game. Something is wrong with a story and with character behavior. I don't trust anyone, nobody rise any sympathy.

I finished DL1 twice (on PS4 and then on PC - keyboard and mouse forever!), then DLC "The Following" with cars and vast spacial fields was... good. At least fun to explore.

Unlike DL1 here in DL2 every charachter I meet feels not real, feels artificial. Also it's hard to distinguish good from bad. Everyone is bad. I don't want to help any faction. After every plot twist, I just think... maaan, drop it all together and get back to piligrim travels.
RamboRusina Oct 28, 2022 @ 12:50pm
Because it felt straight up worse game. Parkour and combat felt sluggish with locked animations and in general slower. Parkour with every place being painted as hint felt like player was expected to be a toddler who has no brain activity of their own, no discoveries to be made. No risk factor for dying took all the excitement away from both parkour and combat. Tons and tons of copy paste made areas bland and boring. All that resulted in you ultimately starting to cheese most parkour with glider.

Enemies were more passive and less dangerous to the point that volatile jumps were the only thing to ever threaten you. Only reason was them coming behind bunch of enemies so you had no sight on it so it was just blind you got hit or not so it didn't feel interactive.
Horrible grind to upgrade items at least initially(no idea if it ever got changed).

Focus on awful characters and awful story instead of free roaming. Zero impact on choices, who cares which awful faction has water in sector X when it changes nothing(was supposed to be one of biggest thing in the game as per dev hype).
World itself didn't feel believable at all. City has had forever great runners who could get care packages, but never bothered to get them? Choice of having stationary packages instead of race to them like DL1 was already dumb AF choice. Trees growing on roofs? People have been locked into city with no water for years before player suddenly gets it for them? Way less zombies in general and these were supposed to be stronger variants yet they are less dangerous and slower? Everybody willingly gave every single gun away and none were left even by accident anywhere? Main character is traveling parkour god who has to start by learning basics? The world building completely failed at this game on epic scale.
