Why are there trees and grass on the roofs
But barren and dead on the ground?

Now i'm not against trees etc growing on roofs, its possible and does but what on earth is going on at ground level, if the things are growing up above it should be growing below as well?

It just looks weird to me..

no natural light reaches the streets because of the building designs, you ever walked on the ground during mid morning in game? you literally need a flashlight.

And fertilized by survivors apparently. Trees and plants find a way to survive IRL.

On the ground they should be growing naturally in the beginning when going to the city there are trees and forests everywhere.

Every green grass and tree in the roof, meanwhile in the ground dead grass and little tree, world design not realistic.

I ran by a dude complaining about having to do work while chopping down a tree that was growing out of concrete slabs on a roof. I noticed and was entertained by that far more than if I saw the same thing in a forest.

Its because everyone lived on the roofs for years to stay away from the undead, duh

The zombies eat all the grass and trees

Has anyone seen root systems for the rooftop trees? Underside of the roof? That would be a cool detail.

some dialog explains it. They say the ground level got polluted. The rain washed the polotion from the roofs. While the ground got permanently damaged. There is this one side quest that actually gives an explanation

Literally just about to say this. Yeah, NPC (cant remember which one) says that the soil is saturated in the chemicals so its FU**ED basically.
