A time limit can add tension if done properly, and if it has in-story reasons to be there, all the better. As long as they handle it properly and let you explore as much as you want after completing the story, I'm all good.

i would argue dead rising 3 did the timer the best
if you wanted to play it with a fairly restrictive timer and with manual saves you had that option with nightmare mode
if you wanted a less restrictive timer and autosaves you had that option with the normal difficulty
