Collegiate Merit: how to increase

I noticed that some of the kids in the college are increasing their merit, which makes me want to increase it, but I don't really know how. What methods/actions can you do that will increase your merit points?

The Compete action which increases merit by 3

In addition to compete there are other opportunities to Increase Merit. For instance solving puzzles, Scripted events and adventures. Also if you increase your compete skills you can get 6 merit points per compete.
