I never felt, that it would be that important, but it makes a difference in this episode. If you have less than 5 dollars you can't afford a Christmas present for Daniel and have to steal one, unless you choose the right dialogue at the vendor, so that he lowers the price. I didn't know that ,so i had to steal, which was a bit disappointing on the writing side. I would have preferred to just have no present then.
But you will never get to a situation where it makes a real difference in the main story if you have money or not. That's not how the stories in LiS are working. There are no completely separated story branches, like in Detroit: Become Human for example. In a quantic dream game the main character would just starve to death if he hadn't enough money at one point in the story ;)
I thought christmas was about giving, not stealing and it makes the main character worse, and again robs a choice.
