Its not just about how you treat Daniel, its about ALL of your choices from the very start of the game. Even choices that do not involve dialog or are unrelated to Daniel . He watches EVERYTHING you do.
So you need to consider your actions in eps 1 as well.
My understanding is they want to make it more life like where you can't just pin something to one choice and walk it back but rather its the sum of actions.
