Online Story mode?
How do you play Story mode with an online friend?

That's disappointing considering it seems like it advertises it as both. Drop in drop out, co op or online. Guess it just means different modes for different types of multiplayer.

Not online. Story mode is only local, but You can connect up to three additional controllers to your computer or console to play with your friends in cooperative mode at one screen.
