"Twenty years ago, I watched my mother die in a temple.

Water came pouring in through the temple gate and carried us both out into the river.

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying on a riverbank, the whole village gathered around me, and every one of them said the same thing, as though it had been drilled into them: 'Shuisheng Town has never had any Yu Temple.'

After that I asked around town for a long time. I asked a great many people.

The answer was always the same. So long that in the end even I began to doubt myself — to wonder whether what I saw that day had ever been real.

Twenty years later, Uncle Jiu sends me a photograph. It is that temple.

In a few days it will be the anniversary of my mother's death. It's time I went back and took a look."

Chen Du is a Chinese folk-horror interactive film steeped in the zhiguai tradition of the Republican era. Today its Steam store page goes live — come ride that train home with Shen Du.

You inherit a trade on the verge of dying out: the Water-Walker. You subdue malevolent things, and you settle old debts that were incurred through water.

Your forebears left behind five ritual implements — the Heaven-Measuring Ruler, the Knot of Shared Hearts, the Yin-Yang Banner, the Marsh-Spirit Pearl, and the Ghost-Revealing Mirror. Every one of them has its use. Every one of them has its rules.

You have yin-yang eyes. Open them and you can see what hides among the crowd. The price is that every time you open them, the corruption creeps a little deeper.

Some clues truly can only be seen by those willing to pay the price.

From the water towns of Jiangnan to Fog City, all the way to Dashen — Republican street life, water-town temples, the neon of the concessions: all of it is drenched in this rain.
