If we are talking attributes, just max one stat line, then go for another. You can realistically max 2 stat lines by the end game, with heroic unlocks, bonuses from gear and so on. You can reassign these at any time on your command bridge.
BUT you are asking about passive skill trees, I presume. It really depends on your class and preferred style of gameplay. First ask yourself, are you using physical weapons and skills, heat based, or both? There are specific passive trees for each, and they are excessively good. The critical hits tree is very strong for starters, also. Then ask yourself, are you ranged or melee? Do you do DOT (damage over time) damage? AOE (area of effect) or single target? Are you having trouble with survival? There are very specific passive trees for all of these things. Oh, also, don't make the mistake of underestimating the debuffs tree. It's very excellent at both giving you survivability and buffing your damage, if you stack debuffs.
Consider that you can respec any passive skill tree at any time by using a Mind Reset, you buy them from the Rogue Trader on your ship, they refresh at each store reset, keep a stack of them handy. So, having said all that, feel free to experiment. Tarot cards allow you to further customize the missions, so if it's too easy, you can add difficulty modifiers for greater rewards (see Murder tarot for +% xp). There are guides out there for class builds, but to be honest, the system is solid enough for you to experiment on your own. It's a lot of fun.
Now go and make those heretics repent their choices.

thanks for the reply, lots of good information, which i shall use to purge the enemies of mankind
For most builds, crits and having ways to apply vulnerabilities and going to be where a lot of your damage comes from.
Early game, take it slow and try different things to find out how you want to play. Life and shield drain on your weapons adds greatly to your survival. ... Once you have some idea what playstyle makes you happy, look up a build guide to get yourself into end game.
Your first playthrough there's a ton of stuff to unlock. Take it slow and check out the Heroic Deeds tab to unlock perks and attributes.
There's a ton of great info here for starting out and some great builds:

For the Emperor!
While they are decent, they usually have much room for improvement.
Kudos for sheer variety though.
If you are looking for actual "beast mode" builds, you won't find them there.
