What class of ship is the Martyr?
I've heard some saying that it's a Gothic class, but the art of Gothic classes I've looked at have their lance batteries below the superstructure. The Superstructure also looks very different. Is it ever mentioned where the Martyr came from, other than it being an Inquisitorial ship?

i think its pre heresy ship as it is clear from some of the lore that uther did not see BIG E as god E

The Raving Dragon is correct, it is from the time of Apostasy so as in the game says 5000 years or so ago, it could be of the Apocalypse class of ship as that predates more recent ships, as it was used in the 30th Millennium but i'm probably wrong :p interesting though.

Scratch that the apocalypse would be too small ^^

Sorry for all the posts, it's most likely a Gothic Class Cruiser, closest you probably get.

doesn't the storyline basically tell that it is very old, and has just been re-discovered by "us" / our inquisitor by chance? similar to the battlefleet gothic armada 2 scenario, where the main characters ship was "lost in the warp" for an eternity (warp anomalies that cause kinda huge time jumps forward from my understanding)

the "god emperor" thing came quite late anyways if i understood that right, likely after he became bound to the golden throne right? because the emperor himself did acutally plan to purge all religious cults from the planets during one of the earlier crusades and was pretty much displeased about the one astartes legion that did build "god-emperor"-temples etc instead of fighting (the pre-heresy word bearers)

Thanks for all the answers! I suppose Gothic is the closest we've got, as it does seem a bit wee for a battleship; but it's definately a well armed cruiser if that's the case. Maybe a grand cruiser? I'll probably just headcannon it that way. :P

And yeah, the Imperial Cult that worshipped the Emperor as a god didn't come about until well after the Horus Heresy, as Big E was a vicious anti-theist. I'm not sure on the exact date, but I think the Imp. Cult formed around late 31k or early 32k? Before the War of the Beast, I know that.

I believe its stated the ship is old, like really old. Its design is pre-heresy, so nobody know who build it, when and with what technology. So it might not fit into a determined ship class.

Also, given its life span, it might have been refurbished a couple of times with new techs, new guns, old guns and techs just being decomissioned but not taken out, etc. But has stated, its not likely close to a Gothic Class Cruiser, its build pre-heresy and lost during the Age of Apostasy.

As for the Emperor, he believed in technology and wanted nothing to do with religion, it was the Imperial Truth. The Imperial Cult was established after the Emperor sat on the Golden Throne after the Horus Heresy. Many people started venerating the Emperor because of his power and self-sacrifice to save mankind. Over time it grew into the Imperial Cult. With more and more people starting to venerate the Emperor throughout small cults in the Imperium, the y eventually unified in the 32nd Millenium. I guess by that time, the powers that be couldnt ignore that so many worshipped the Emperor and decided to make use of it by giving eveyone a common culture based on their love for the Emperor (and also some hope given that the galaxy is a dark and cruel place, having faith that the Emperor protects its better then having faith technology protects).

I see similarities in the design to the Gloriana class (battle cruiser) or maybe the Victory class (battleship) but am not sure.

It has 0 dorsal guns. It is definitely a cruiser. Broadside batteries does not look like lances though, more like macro-cannons. But i do not recognize such configuration of guns.
Distinctive reinforced armored prow and hull form does not indicate that it is really one of the older ship designs. It does look like one of the modern Imperial Navy ships designes. That is to say "modern" is realy a stretch as it means like last 10000 years or so.

Its a gothic class cruiser that has been heavily modified by tiberius and misclassified as a fortress monastery
Stufkov Aug 4, 2021 @ 6:35am
because of the age of the ship, the non-standard weaponry (hybrid Macro-Lance cannons on the same platform) the Gothic-class cruiser cannot be applied,
in the game the martyr cogitator registers its class as
CLASS-ALPHA subclass 35. vessel Lucius 442
