I'm running a Grav Gun on my lvl 96 Crusader currently.
Old Gravgun had huge AOE with persistent damage and it would clean up everything in it's path.
I see your point (basically play what you enjoy the most) but its not always like this. If you enjoy how something plays a lot but it ends up being very weak at some point enjoyment often plummets as a result when it starts not being good enough anymore. Where as you could of played something you enjoyed a tad less but has no issues that hold you back so you get more out of it in the end.
It's fine to do so if they are viable and that's what you enjoy. Sometimes they are not viable when you hit certain content though. POE is the biggest example of this when a lot of builds just don't cut it in vast depths of endgame. Generally most people like succeeding or winning at things for the most part so if you remove that possibility completely enjoyment will most likely drop.
