If it's your first, you should totally do seasonal. There will be benefits to it, and seasonal characters can share stuff between them. They'll all get converted to regular once the season is done.
And yes - cabals are like clans or mmo guilds. Once you get to a certain level, you can create your own. Until then, you can join someone elses...
The season stuff shows up on your quick-mission menu (or on the main menu), and you can see what activities you'll need to complete the get the rewards. You'll need to complete at least one full playthrough of the base game (as in any character other than robot guy) to get some of them.
To be clear - I've been playing it on the xbox for months (only on PC now for the seasons), so I'm completely used to the controller scheme, which I think is quite good. I haven't figured out how to use chat when the controller is active, since that uses a keyboard, and which I don't care about. As far as actually playing the game, I find zero issues with the controller.
