just install the one with the cooler name and play :-)
Also, when does the expansion content come into play?
But base+expansion divides the story in half.
They are all good. Just pick what you think looks cool, and go from there. Honestly you can make anything work pretty easily on this game.
Well Psyker probably has fastest clear speeds. Crusader is most survivable. (Might have changed given the patch that affects Augmented Body II, but I'll see...
I don't know assassin well enough so you'll need other sources there.
Tech Adept: You have an army of upgradeable murder bots and are too cool to walk. With the new 'regenerates a % of its max hp a second' upgrade this gets out of hand FAST in terms of durability, but still suffers from 'I'll just stand in this corrosive gas cloud until it kills me.' issues sometimes. I'm sure there is an optimal build out there, but the combination of pets to take aggro, deal damage and pretty solid personal ranged weapons (Plasma Chaviler Alpha slows everyone and hits 5 people at once. Beta has a 'murder this guy 25% better' high damage beam and armor breaking built into it's shots.) means that aside from potentially needing to wait a second at the start of a mission to get the army rolling I really enjoy him. I tend to go with 2 Kataphron destroyers for Phosphor/Plasma/Grav fun times, a Kastalan also set up for long range with double Phosphor, then a pack of Combustors with las weaponry (seems to have best mix of dps with long range, but Melta's find armor amusing so take your pick) and one sqaud of 4 (love that perk) of the melee spiders to keep attention. Potentially having double melee (8 psiloi) is better but I really feel like the melee minions suffer on getting up to enemies. Kastalan especially was ho-hum until I got it set to ranged only and it went to down. Kataphron flamer suffers similar 'can't get in range' issues. I'm not optimal since I didn't get the 'if no enemies within 5 yards get more ranged damage' perk to start (Can't recall which it was.) but the whole 'every hit on any of my bots heals me for 1% of my max hp' option might save my life later on.
Crusader:
I've found that building defensively early on lets me swap between ranged and melee or use any weapon I take a liking too pretty effectively. Enough resistance to damage and regen covers for a lot of issues. If you want melee, the perk of the melee subclass is quite good. But Heavy weapons 'more damage for 10 seconds after kills' works with everything.
Melee: Evicerator is literally a two handed chainsaw of death to all and saundry, though melee is melee so even with potentially insane survivability things get rough semi-regularly. Big sweeping attacks clear out anything below a Champion in a swipe or two at +3 (yeah, yeah, 'easy mode' but when you barely have the start of a build...) Plus you have armor busting tools when you need it. (Power hammer and Storm Shield has really helped against literal tanks and demon engines.)
Ranged: Bolter is an unnaturally capable all rounder. It has armor breaking attacks, fleshbane full auto, AoE burst supressing fire and a snipe. No wonder the SoB's and Astarties use them! It's so damn good at dealing with any given problem that I often dont bother pulling out my dedicated 'kill the armor' weapon. Though the heavy bolter (once you get some move speed bonuses) is a thing of beauty now. Noisy, murderously high RoF beauty.
Psycher:
Not gonna lie, the AoE damage you can put out is just obscene. Double rod gives you Witchfire, a fast recharging, heat venting HUGE AoE blast that knocks back/down enemies. Between that, Firestorm and Hemmorage I usually delete 2-3 groups entierly. (Credit to my buffs here.) Meanwhile in the other set I have a staff purely to hold MORE buffs. A cheat death, double damage on first hit on an enemy (cue Witchfire alpha strike) and 30% dodge vs ranged that thanks to runes also give me more damage/speed/regen/supression regen as I prefer? A buff that says 'I don't care about armor', combined with more damage and faster recharge on Witchfire and the other attack that vents heat, along with flat Damage resist, all of these lasting 90 seconds to a use (so always up basically) thanks to the double length of buffs perk and the duration buff rune on them. One last slot on the staff setup (I use pyrokinetic for it's huge aoe and supression damage that sets up for) Crush might as well read 'Target in red supression dies.' when you give it DoT, armor ignore and 'more damage' runes. As in 'base 5k damage before critical hits or buffs are accounted for' single target 'K, thanks die.'
Equally scary is another buff based build I've considered. There's a buff to kinetic damage only, that plus the damage/recharge rate buff and the others, along with double bolt or auto pistols could be amazing.
This is a reminder that all this comes from someone who is NOT at endgame, it is only personal experience.
