Shield block
I bring this up because I find myself never bothering to use it because it only lasts a split second. Could shield block be transitioned into something more useful? A small period of high frontal damage reduction or a skill that activates, consumes an amount of focus per second, and negates frontal damage? Maybe even have each blocked hit cost an extra amount of focus on top of the cost-per-second

I usually pick skills around it and I think theres a relic ability that recovers suppression when attacks are blocked..so Ill wait till Im overwhelmed and losing too much suppression then just hold it down and it just keeps recasting every second and vs a mob some attacks will hit it regardless through sheer volume of incoming attacks and get blocked helping sustain your suppression.

Could still be changed but thats just what I use it for..or if there is a really nasty telegraphed attack I dont want to dodge just cast it with proper timing to avoid having to move.

Also I think it does block frontal damage at a cost to focus currently 1 per activation.

Itd be cool if it was just an on/off where you raise shield for damage reduction stance reduced movement and +0.5s to your cooldowns or something with a focus drain xx/sec

There are indeed many nasty telegraphed attacks, such as the Sentinels' stomp. Since the shield block makes you essentially invulnerable from the front for a split second, I guess it is supposed to reward good timing.

However, the real benefit of the shields are their AOE skills, and the passive that allows the shield to increase your deflect value by 50%. Once you get your deflect to 70%, you can more or less forget about using shield block.

That makes me wonder if a "Breacher" build is possible--with a one-handed ranged weapon and a shield. I am thinking it might work with an inferno pistol and some speccing into the heat and DOT trees, although it would still be inferior to using a 1h hammer, sword, or axe.

I really hope they make ranged builds more viable in 2.0!

Skills and attributes that trigger on focus as Block costs 2 focus per pulse. Not that great early on but if you've maxed out the important skills they are handy especially when your focus regen is 2+ per second and/or the self-flaglation perk.

Bulwark of zeal gives 5% damage reduction for 10 seconds per pulse

Invigorating faith will heal you 1% of total HP per pulse

vigor (in virtue attribute) also will heal you 1% of total HP per pulse
