Everything has an end and an end always results in a new beginning.
I've spent 1k hours ingame myself and still can't play it today, I'll have to move on to other games.....
No reason to start messing around with lutris unless you pirate the game.. Do you guys use pirate versions?!?
Using lutris will only create issues for you, for example like you just now experience.
Use the tools available for you, and steam is without doubt the easiest way to game on linux.
Witch is why you should use proton-GE, that is a fork of proton-experimental but with testing and fixes done to work better on dekstop machines.
The "normal" steam proton might work for you, but is for the steamdeck (kinda).
Just install proton-GE and select that in steam and be done.
I won't go into details how to install, because it varies vastly depending on what distro you are using.
If you want to try Proton-GE, there appears to be a decent install tutorial on makeuseof that covers installing it on Lutris and Steam with or without Flatpak.
If you're not currently using the Flatpak version of Steam, you could try that, although be aware that the flatpak is basically a third party wrapper for Steam so it's technically not as trustworthy. Sometimes Flatpak can eliminate certain edge cases with your system configuration. That's what it's for - to make installing software more convenient.
Otherwise, I think using
asdf [asdf-vm.com] as mentioned on the proton-GE github [github.com] could probably be a good solution.
