Crossplay not working?

I just picked this up on steam and my friend purchased this on epic years ago. We tried to connect with the ID system, but couldn't manage to get it working. I saw posts saying this used to work, and is no longer working after the 1.0 launch. Does anyone know if this is a bug that will be fix, or if this is intentional? Probably also worth noting that I have no intention of linking an epic account to my steam, but when I saw cross-play listed as a feature on the product page, I assumed that connecting with those who purchased on epic would be included as a game feature.

You have to have an epic account linked to do it IIRC because of how epic works

Can not be true.
I have only the steam version and have played a lot with people who have the epic version.
And I had never an epic account.

They have changed the way you do it. Now you need an epic account to cross play. After link you need to set your worlds “multiplayer settings” to use epic.

Have you tested this on the 1.0 version of the game? If so, how did you accomplish the connection?

I've seen several people in other posts say that this is a new issue with the 1.0 release
