And yeah, this definitely sounds more like a system problem than a game problem. Except in rare cases, programs typically just ask Windows which device to output to.
Start > Settings > System > Sound
Check the first dropdown, "Choose your output device"; Make sure it has the correct item selected.
It's entirely possible that Windows has decided that another connected device (such as a controller or HDMI monitor) is the appropriate audio output device. If you determine that this is the case, and the automatically selected output device is one that you will never use, you can click the "Manage sound devices" link just below the "Troubleshoot" button, and then click on the output device(s) you'd like to remove and press the "Disable" button for each of them.
